Federal State elections in Hessen (Germany)

Our Federal State elections were held yesterday. Our local conservative party (CDU) who held an absolute majority beforehand and supplied the prime minister Roland Koch, lost 12.0% of their votes, compared to the last election and now can not even obtain a majority by forming a coalition with the Libertarian Party (FPD). The Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS/Die Linke), which is the party to the left of the labour party (SPD) has obtained 5.1% and thus barely overcome the hurdle of five procent, which is necessary to get seats in the parliament. They have now, for the first time, obtained seats in two of the western (old) federal states or Germany. Final percentages and seatings:

Conservative - 36.8% - 42 seats
Labour - 36.7% - 42 seats
Libertarian - 9.8% - 11 seats
Greens - 7.4% - 9 seats
Lefts - 5.1% - 6 seats
Others - 4.5%

Such a dramatic loss of 12.0% in one election season is almost unpreceded in German history. Coalition negotiations are yet to be completed, but it is almost certain that our prime minister, who was responsible for lots of terrible conservative politics, and who to date ran on a campaign against "immigrants and communists" is now history. The Lefts made it into parliament by 3353 votes. It is a great day for Hessen and for Germany. And another sign that the conservative wave that engulfed the world since 2001 is dying down.
