Microwaved Baby Trial Begins in Ohio
By JAMES HANNAH, Associated Press Writer
Monday, January 28, 2008

(01-28) 06:49 PST Dayton, Ohio (AP) --
Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a woman accused of killing her 1-month-old daughter by burning the child in a microwave oven.
If convicted of aggravated murder, China Arnold, 27, could face the death penalty.
Police investigators believe Arnold killed 1-month-old Paris Talley by putting her in a microwave at her Dayton home in 2005. Coroner's officials said the baby suffered high-heat internal injuries and had no external burns. They have ruled out scalding water, open flame or other possible causes of death that could have damaged the skin.
Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion has said Arnold had nothing to do with her daughter's death and was stunned when investigators told her that a microwave might have been involved. Arnold took the baby to the hospital after finding her unconscious and does not know how she died, Rion said.

The story says that the woman had some other kids in the house, so one other possibility is that one of them put the baby in the microwave while the mom was passed out - which is even more disturbing than the idea of the drunken mom doing it.

These are the kind of stories that make me wonder if humanity is beyond all redemption...

1. Crazy happens
and kids are often jealous of a newborn.

I hope they investigate the mother thoroughly for symptoms of postpartum psychosis, or even the depression that might have sent her to the bottle for comfort.

3. I agree. Jail is the wrong place. She needs meds and therapy.
I can't imagine how awful that death was for that little one or for anyone who witnessed it. Now the other kids are going to probably lose their mom and not get the help they need, too. Horrifying all around.

2. You know, I'm surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often...
Not with human life, but with defenseless animals. When microwaves first came into use, I wonder if Bush-like kids would go high-tech and move from firecrackers or gasoline to microwave ovens for their sadistic pleasure. I expected to read stories about lizards or frogs or rodents being tortured and killed in this manner. Fortunately, I haven't...

I never thought, however, that I would ever read about a human life being taken in this manner...
