Selling Water More Profitable Than Growing Crops, Say California Farmers

Farmers in California say more money can be made by selling their subsidized water to other farms and towns since it would be more profitable than growing crops. "It just makes dollars and sense right now," says Sacramento Valley farmer Bruce Rolen.

California's water shortage is the worst in ten years and is responsible for the price hike there. Some who want to sell their water include those that grow water-intensive crops like rice. Their customers would be in the south where it's dry.

1. It's incredibly stupid that we have to subsidize their water, then buy it from them.
I guess that's the name of the game now. Isn't it the same with oil?

9. Absolutely right...
We almost give the water to them, then we pay again when we buy the food. If we are giving them our water, we should get a huge discount on the food they produce with it. They couldn't do it at all without that water.

11. American food has always been heavily subsidized
up until recently we haven't paid anything close to what it actually costs to produce and transport.

it's getting worse these days but we have always paid less for our food here.

13. Time to recommend Reisner's "Cadillac Desert" once again ...
read how we're subsidising water even to grow GRASS for beef cattle in CA ... while produce growers in CA can undersell Eastern farmers because of underpriced water.
