UK Times: Brewster Jennings outed by 'treasonous' US govt official in 2001, not 2003
The UK's Sunday Times has another article today, Tip-off thwarted nuclear spy ring probe, in their series about the penetration of US agencies by a criminal network of Turkish, Israeli and US government officials stealing nuclear secrets and selling them on the black market to the highest bidder.

The focus of this new Times article is the original outing of Brewster Jennings, the CIA cover company that Valerie Plame Wilson worked for. The article confirms that Marc Grossman, former # 3 State Dept official, and former Ambassador to Turkey, warned his Turkish associates to be wary of Brewster Jennings because it was a CIA front operation. This disclosure occurred in the summer of 2001, two years prior to the outing of Valerie Plame.

The FBI warned the CIA about Grossman's activities and Brewster Jennings was dismantled shortly thereafter.

Given the libel laws in the UK, the Times has not published Marc Grossman's name again in this piece, but long-time observers of this case all recognize that Grossman is the unnamed official in this article, as well as the previous two
articles.

From the Times:
The claims that a State Department official blew the investigation into a nuclear smuggling ring have been made by Sibel Edmonds, 38, a former Turkish language translator in the FBI’s Washington field office.
<...>
She has previously told The Sunday Times she heard evidence that foreign intelligence agents had enlisted US officials to acquire a network of moles in sensitive military and nuclear institutions.

Her latest claims relate to a number of intercepted recordings believed to have been made between the summer and autumn of 2001. At that time, foreign agents were actively attempting to acquire the West’s nuclear secrets and technology.

More from the Times:
One group of Turkish agents who had come to America on the pretext of researching alternative energy sources was introduced to Brewster Jennings through the Washington-based American Turkish Council (ATC), a lobby group that aids commercial ties between the countries. Edmonds says the Turks believed Brewster Jennings to be energy consultants and were planning to hire them.

We know that the FBI was running a counter-intelligence operation against the Turkish diplomatic community, the American Turkish Council (ATC) and other groups such as the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (A.T.A.A.)

Times:
But said: " found out about the arrangement... and he contacted one of the foreign targets and said... you need to stay away from Brewster Jennings because they are a cover for the government.

“The target... immediately followed up by calling several people to warn them about Brewster Jennings.

“At least one of them was at the ATC. This person also called an ISI person to warn them.” If the ISI was made aware of the CIA front company , then this would almost certainly have damaged the investigation into the activities of Khan. Plame’s cover would also have been compromised, although Edmonds never heard her name mentioned on the intercepts. Shortly afterwards, Plame was moved to a different operation.

Plame was moved because Brewster Jennings was dismantled due to the FBI discovering that Grossman had blown the cover. Plame has been forbidden by the CIA to refer to her work, or even the fact that she worked at CIA, prior to 2002.

In Joe Wilson's book, The Politics of Truth, he says that he met his future wife, Valerie Plame, at an American Turkish Council (ATC) event at the residence of the Turkish ambassador in Washington DC in 1997. At the time, both the ATC and the Turkish diplomatic community were targets of FBI investigations.

Incidentally Wilson was on the Defense subcommittee of the board of the ATC, and he was personally and professionally close to ATC Chairman and former National Security Advisor, Brent Scowcroft. Scowcroft recently appeared in a Rogue's Gallery apparently indicating that he is one of the guilty parties in Sibel Edmonds' case.

Wilson's consulting company, JC Wilson International Ventures, appears to have some Turkish clients, some of which may have come through his involvement at the ATC.

Clearly there are a number of potential conflicts of interest here. I don't have any theory as to what was going on here, there are more questions than answers. Wilson had business interests with the ATC, and he was friendly with ATC Chair Brent Scowcroft, who was apparently a target of these investigations. The idea of a CIA agent dating, then marrying, someone so closely aligned with a target also gives the appearance of a conflict of interest.

An anonymous letter, apparently written by an FBI official, obtained by the Times and others outlining many of the facts in this case, states that much of this information was given to the Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald who was investigating the 2003 outing of Plame, and the information was also given to the Scooter Libby defense team but apparently neither side decided to use this information for their own purposes.

The Times:
"Phillip Giraldi, a former CIA officer, said: “It’s pretty clear Plame was targeting the Turks. If indeed was working with the Turks to violate US law on nuclear exports, it would have been in his interest to alert them to the fact that this woman’s company was affiliated to the CIA. I don’t know if that’s treason legally but many people would consider it to be.”"

Marc Grossman has again (anonymously) denied the charges against him, however in an interview this week, Phil Giraldi wondered why neither Grossman nor any of the others were actively working to exonerate themselves:
"Quite honestly, if I were Marc Grossman, who allegedly is now making $3 million a year working for the Cohen Group, I would be kind of concerned about my personal reputation where people are saying that I was taking money, and I would want to straighten out the record and I would want to the FBI to produce a definitive statement about me, and (Grossman) hasn't demanded that. He hasn't gone after that, and none of the other people in this case have gone after that, so I'm wondering why, if these people are innocent, they aren't making a more serious effort to demonstrate that they are."

I wonder too.

Significantly, since the Times began this series three weeks ago, the White House has quietly moved to legalize the sale of nuclear technology to Turkey in an apparent attempt to 'Exonerate Neocon Criminals' who have been illegally selling this technology for a decade. Congress has 90 days to block this legislation, otherwise it becomes law. If Turkey wants and deserves nuclear technology, this decision should be made openly and transparently, not the result of stealth decisions made by this administration to hide crimes of senior US officials.

We need public open hearings to determine which officials have been supplying the nuclear black market before this becomes law.

2. The outing of Brewster Jennings is what raised this to the level
of treason because it literally blinded the CIA in the area of nuclear weapons development in the Middle East for several years, at least until another cover organization could be set up and new contacts made.

This was done at a critical time, when Stupid & the PNAC goons were trying to sell the idea that Iran, Iraq and Syria were all just weeks away from exploding nuclear warheads over Israel. Evidence to the contrary was the last thing they wanted to come through and that's why Brewster Jennings and all its contacts had to be neutralized by exposure.

Plame was named later for pure vengeance, but that was a minor crime in comparison to what they did when they outed Brewster Jennings.

And their party did nothing and continues to block all efforts into a full and honest investigation.

65. How much of this selling of nuclear secrets activity can actually be made
legal retroactively? How many in the Congress are in legal jeopardy?

Lukery showed us how the Bush administration seems to be trying to cover their legal butts by suddenly making Turkey
a LEGAL partner in nuclear arms and a LEGAL possessor of our nuclear secrets:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/01/20080123-6.html

Looks like BuchCo is doing what it did after the illegal spying -- attempting to make the illegal activities retroactively legal.

A list of sudden BushCo steps, statements and legal initiatives by BushCo here provided originally by Lukery:

http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=opera&oe=utf-8&ncl=1126778935&hl=en&scoring=d

Please notice the dates. All of this occurred right after the expose' articles came out in the U.K.

Also troublesome is the lingering unanswered question: Why are so many of our Congressional leaders blocking this case from investigation? Is the blanket claim of the Sibel allegations as being "sensitive" and a "national security issue" so believable with this administration? Is there something heavy being held over their heads that they're afraid of? If that's not it -- is it the appearance of culpability of a few of their own that is making them slam their investigative brakes?

Kicked and recommended. This story is extremely important and must be kicked, recommended, and continued day after day until it finally starts drawing blood here. It is GREAT to see that over 6,400 have read another of Lukery's great threads on this topic, the one entitled: "White House in panic over Sibel Edmonds?" Link here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2761324

I have the deepest respect for Sibel, Lukery, and all those who are working to make this story visible here in the U.S.

Yes, I do know that the OP covered some of the legal butt-covering today --- but I want to beat on this drum as loud as possible.

78. It is really bad judgment to suggest partnering with Turkey to this extent.
Turkey sided with Germany in WWs I and II. Turkey is now democratic and secular but insecure about both democracy and secular government.

Is this part of a deal to broker peace for Israel? There is bound to be much more to this than meets the eye.

I am just wondering-
My neighbor is an FBI agent- the big black SUV and all.
I asked him how he felt about what had happened with you
and he told me he had never heard of you.
Is that possible?

10. Yes, most people WOULD consider that treason
When a top government official reveals our secret counter-proliferation efforts to foreigners with uncertain loyalties, that certainly seems like treason. Especially if, as it seems, that information was passed on to the main target of that counter-proliferation effort, the exact network that was providing nuclear technology to the "rogue" nations.

So when does the trial start?

17. Grossman
It was Grossman.

See Giraldi for example, from last week:
"...a conversation in which Grossman warned the Turks that Brewster Jennings, the CIA cover company that Valerie Plame worked for, was “government” – you know, a code word for the Agency, and this apparently took place in late 2001, so it was way before Robert Novak outed Valerie Plame and her cover company. In this case, it went to the Turks, and the FBI was listening in on the Turks, when they called the Pakistanis and informed Pakistani intelligence about this."

79. Grossman per Wikipedia for those of us who don't know aobut him
n 2005, Ambassador Marc Grossman completed 29 years of public service when he retired from the State Department as the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. Ambassador Grossman served as the Department’s third-ranking official, supporting U.S. diplomacy worldwide.

Ambassador Grossman previously served as the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources from 2000 to 2001. At the direction of the Secretary of State, he revamped the State Department’s human resource strategies, including the Department’s strategies for training, assigning, and retaining personnel both at home and abroad.

. . . .

Ambassador Grossman was U.S. Ambassador to Turkey from 1994 to 1997. In Turkey, he promoted security cooperation, human rights and democracy, and a vibrant U.S.-Turkish economic relationship. Ambassador Grossman had previously served as the U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission from 1989 to 1992.

. . . .

On 25 January 2008, Joshua Frank at dissidentvoice.org headlined "Why Bush Wants to Legalize the Nuke Trade with Turkey," and presented evidence, from recent articles in The Times and elsewhere, in which FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds alleges that the Bush Administration is trying to cover up corrupt private sales of U.S. nuclear secrets to the A.Q. Khan network in Pakistan via Turkey, in which Marc Grossman was allegedly involved. Reportedly, a request which Bush "quietly announced on January 22 that the president would like Congress to approve the sale of nuclear secrets to Turkey" aimed to protect the people who had sold these secrets. "As with most stories of this magnitude, the U.S. media has put on blinders, opting not to report" it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Grossman

Grossman's testimony before Congress

Mr. Chairman, in February, the Alliance went through a bruising debate about
defense support for Turkey under Article IV of the NATO Treaty.

The Alliance did arrive at the right answer. The Defense Policy Committee
directed military assistance to Turkey to address a threat of attack from Iraq.
That military assistance is now in place: NATO deployed AWACs planes,
Patriot missiles, and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical defense teams.

This disagreement did damage the Alliance. It is my view, however, as
Secretary General Robertson himself said afterwards, that this was a hit above
the waterline and that NATO would recover. Secretary Powell's visit last week
is part of that recovery.

Because it is essential that NATO continues to knit together the community of
European and North American democracies as an Alliance of shared values
and collective security, it would be wrong to draw the conclusion that we
should stop pushing NATO to change to address these threats.

Another great post - I think you and Sibel are getting there.

And is Wilson's connection to ATC, while marrying a CIA agent investigating ATC, and his long time relationship with Grossman, all just a coincidence? I don't know if I believe in that level of coincidence.

40. Reader's comment posted at end of Times article:
Thank you "Times" for covering this story. Many of us in the states have tried to get this information into the press and onto the agendas of our congresspeople--to no avail. This story has so many twists and turns, and clearly places our country and leadership in a very bad light. However, many of us welcome the facts, which can only come through pressure to investigate. Getting coverage (and hopefully pressure) from your side of the Atlantic is very helpful. Please keep up the excellent reporting.

42. Whoahhh, hold the horses.
I just now noticed that this Sunday Times series is being co-authored by Joe Lauria.

Please read my piece about my suspicions of Lauria's involvement in the smearing of Jason Leopold:

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Truth2Tell/44

...

Who is Joe Lauria?

Joe Lauria appears at first blush to be an accredited progressive journalist. Most recent references to Mr. Lauria and his work reveal an evenhanded and thoughtful writer on subjects such as the run up to the Iraq war, etc. His work has even coincidentally included at least one appearance on Howard Kurtz’s “Reliable Sources” show on CNN.

However, it’s very difficult to find anything on Mr. Lauria dated prior to 2003 or so.

What old work is searchable is interesting in how it directly contrasts with his more recent stuff. For example: this 2001 Boston Globe piece, Seeking Saddam’s Smoking Gun <http://www.spiritoftruth.org/cached/Seekin... >, still viewable at Free Republic.

Lauria's source for that article was wingnut Laurie Mylroie <http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/... >, who is chummy with John Bolton, Paul Wolfowitz, Scooter Libby, and Richard Perle.

Or this 2001 Saddam = Bio weapons piece <http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issue... > In the Vancouver Sun. Interesting how his outlook seems to have flipped.

I’d love to find this article <http://cns.miis.edu/pubs/week/020311.htm > referenced in 2002 by the warmongering Center for Nonproliferation Studies: Joe Lauria, "How Bin Laden Tried to Get the Bomb," Gazette (Montreal), October 2, 2001, p. B1, but the Gazette doesn’t seem to have it up any longer.

Anyway, Lauria appears to have been focused for quite some time on issues relating to both the UN and Saddam’s alleged ties to bio weapons.

Especially note Lauria's career transformation from neo-con hatchet man to a supposed liberal snuggle friend, and his ties to Howard Kurtz and the WaPo.

I have believed for awhile that Joe Lauria is some type of operative using journalism as a cover.

Just my humble opinion, and I really have no idea what that means to this case, except that we may be seeing forces we are unaware of playing out a conflict we can only see the edges of.

The plot thickens

81. I should emphasize
that none of my suspicions about Joe Lauria mean I don't believe the Sibel allegations. I do.

My working hypothesis at this point is that elements of the American intelligence establishment have turned against the Cheney faction pseudo-Zionist neo-con mafia. I speculate that these anti-neocon powers include both Wilsons, the WapPo CIA/phony journalist crowd (including Lauria), maybe Scowcroft/Baker et al and powers we are not aware of. I suspect these folks are trying to tighten the screws on the neo-cons. I suspect that the torture videos scandal is also tied to this power struggle. And the Plame case.

Just thinkin' out loud here.

82. The bottom-line is that the Economy trumps everything....

and there may be more to this than simply "pseudo-Zionism", afterall the CIA is all about America's corporate economic interests. Anything that moves the US closer to securing its "Persian Gulf" oil interests may be what this is all about, including accelerating Iran's nuclear program so that we can then bomb them.

61. speaking of Jason Leopold
He has a recent piece tying the Plame leak case timeline to the timing of missing emails at the White House.

http://baltimorechronicle.com/2008/012408Leopold.shtml

With Sibel's case intertwining with Plame-Wilson, it might be worth looking into any similar coincidences.

Could Joe have been working with Valerie to help spy on the ATC, Grossman & Scowcroft and their nuclear black market ring?

60. So the outing of Brewster Jennings in 2001 is the reason those involved in the outing of Plame
said with such confidence that she was not under cover and that her employment in the CIA was well-known. Her cover had been compromised in 2001... by their agents selling nuclear secrets for profit.

It's postngs like this that make DU part of my daily must reads. This story is getting progressively more exposure. At some point, there won't be a rug big enough to sweep this treasonous corruption under. You just know this goes right up into the Executive branch and into the Office of the VP. Cheney has made millions trading with the people who now have the technology to inflict some real horror on the world. He needs to be impeached and dragged to the Hague for his crimes against the world.

90. Interesting things happening in the summer of 2001.
Reading about Grossman outing Brewster Jennings in the summer of 2001 reminded me of some interesting research by leveymg:

The Saudi Prince's Secret: Bush, Sr. Sold-Out CIA to Build Pakistan A-Bomb

snip

But, after the 2000 election, the rules were changed about how the U.S conducted covert operations. With the Bush-Cheney Administration, quiet surveillance and penetration of Saudi-financed WMD and terrorist networks were out, and the very fact that target countries were running nuclear programs -- with the help of the CIA -- became a casus belli for military attack of “Axis of Evil” countries.

* One can easily accept that the Bushites, now back in power, were desperate enough to advance their war-making agenda that they were willing to sacrifice the CIA’s most effective nuclear counter-proliferation program.

* An alternative explanation is that one faction of the Agency that had split in the 1970s was out to destroy its rival, which had managed the counter-proliferation and counter-terrorism divisions with a light touch during the Clinton years.

* Or, it has been suggested, that certain third countries had also piggy-backed onto the A.Q. Khan network, and outed the Pakistanis in an attempt to spark a regional war as a way manipulate the U.S. into, once-and-for-all, disposing of their regional rivals.

* Finally, there is evidence that the Bush team did some quick housekeeping once back in the White House, and simply did away with the source of so much incriminating evidence, the A.Q. Khan network had outlived its original purpose, and had to be shut down because it continued to use many of the same financial and logistical networks linked to the Saudis and Pakistanis, and that had already compromised too much.

Perhaps, some combination of these motives, along with a simple-minded executive decision to “take out” Khan explains it. The fact of the outing is indisputable, however. Within months of taking power, the Administration closed down much of the counter-proliferation and counter-terrorism programs they inherited. In May 2001, CIA Director George Tenet and Undersecretary of State Richard Armitage, an old Bush Asia hand, met with Pakistani President Musharaff. Two weeks later, Khan was outed with the publication on June 1 of a story in Rupert Murdoch's Financial Times quoting Armitage as saying that a certain ranking "retired figure" within the Pakistani nuclear establishment had been trading weapons technology with North Korea. See, http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/pakistan/khan.h... ; http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/2/1/183411/6866

Bush-Cheney Closed Down U.S. Counterterrorism Along with the CIA's Khan "Sting" Operation, Leading to 9-11

At the same time, major U.S. counter-terrorism operations with a nexus in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan were closed down, as they used much of the same financial and logistical network as Khan, But, for some reason, terrorist operatives scattered around the world -- a number of them inside the U.S.-- were not rolled-up or otherwise neutralized. In early 2001, the FBI terminated Operation Monarch Crossing, which linked Saudi-controlled financing in the U.S. with Pakistani nuclear proliferation. http://www.storiesthatmatter.org/index.php?option=com_c... The Bureau was also forced to shutter Operation Catchers Mitt , http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/9/11/105117/571 at the same time NSA and DIA were ordered to erase much of the data it had compiled in Able-Danger , another Clinton-era secret program mapping the al-Qaeda network inside the U.S.

There has been little attention paid to the Bush-Cheney Administration's orders to shut down these counter-terrorism programs. Given the larger context, it should come as no surprise that these people are willing to sacrifice just about anything to cover their tracks.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=1281780

Hmmm...wonder if Grossman's outing of Brewster Jennings was somehow coordinated with Armitage's outing of Khan?
