Please help stop the sale of dog and cat fur in our stores-Petition.
Edited on Fri Feb-23-07 09:23 PM by Kajsa
I received this from the Humane Society today.
This story was also mentioned on both NBC and ABC
local news programs tonight.

Apparently, some items containing so called "faux fur"
is not "faux" at all. It is taken from dogs ( and cats)
mostly from China. I can't even describe the conditions.
Prohibiting this practice is coming up for a vote in Congress.

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_fur_labeling

In Defense of Animals is taking action against the
dog/cat fur traders.

Thanks so much for your help.

major department stores.

An animal advocacy group says its investigation has turned up coats -- some with designer labels, some at higher-end retailers -- with fur from man's best friend. Some retailers were set scrambling to pull the coats from shelves, take them off Web sites and even offer refunds to consumers.
The Humane Society of the United States said it purchased coats from reputable outlets, such as upscale Nordstrom, with designer labels -- Andrew Marc, Tommy Hilfiger, for example -- and found them trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, even though the fur was advertised as fake.

57. Good point. Here is what I did
I told the minimum wage paid worker in my local Pet Supermarket what the store was (unknowingly) selling and he was horrified. I told him about the heavy fines PER ITEM and to inform his superiors. I checked back a few days later and the store, which is a National Chain, no longer had the offending items on the shelves.

4. Dogs Yes, Cats No. There must be an incentive to eradicate feral cats.
Feral Cats are one of the most ecologically destructive species on the face of the earth. I, for one, would like to have the pelts of a half-dozen or so bird predators pinned to the wall of my shed. I kid you not! They are genuine bad news from Indonesia to the West Coast of the USA.

Being a humane and conscientious person, I recommend live animal traps and sudden death for these creatures, in the intersts of the greater good.

10. Best laugh I've had all day, this post.
SO, you'd justify inhumane revenge upon animals that we, as people, are responsible for in the creation of this problem? You DO know how they "harvest" fur, right? Of course you do.

It IS revenge..."pinned to the wall of my shed" you know. It's not "happy little environmentalist looking for a solution" at that point.

Humane...conscientious? Pfft.

BTW, ecologically destructive...look in the damn mirror.

Being a human and conscientious person, I recommend live traps and sudden death for these creatures, in the interest of the greater good.

"Feral" is a myth with regards to domesticated cats. They have been domesticated for millenia. Some cats are socially disfunctional, but guess what? So are some human beings.

18. so you want to protect dogs and cats
both generally overpopulated species, at the expense of other four-legged fur-bearing mammals?

why is it bad to use dog fur and ok to use raccoon fur?

and before you answer - I know you oppose exploiting raccoons and all the others too. But getting MORE incensed about dogs and cats seems to me disingenuous. Just trying to get petowners to jump on the bandwagon.

And why is eating horse meat taboo in this country? hell, the cows and chickens most people eat daily are so badly treated it is appalling. But we get all misty-eyed over horses. Why?

35. How about the nearly 10,000 unwanted pets
that are euthanized every day in this country?

Every one was a cute puppy or kitten, most bred in "mills" and sold in pet stores, only to be abandoned in a year or so when the owners get tired of them.

This callousness not only offends the sensibilities of decent people for its sheer evil, it also desensitizes vast numbers of children to such things as loyalty, respect for life, kindness, responsibility...

40. Frogcycle, I do that too.

The Humane Society and others like them cover a huge area
when it comes to animal abuse and protections.

Puppy Mills, Cat breeders, horse breeders, inhumane farming,
ETC! you name it, they are there.
NRDC, The Wilderness Society, Sierra Club- all of them are involved.

This is by far not the only area we tackle.
But this is coming up for a vote, soon.
Now is the time to act on this one.

If it's not prohibited, this crap will just escalate.

36. The way they kill these dogs and cats is beyond obscene
I saw some footage on French TV consisting of videos smuggled out of China showing the way they kill these poor animals. It really turns the stomach. They keep these animals in tiny cages and often just beat them to death. It just tears me up to think about it. Even animals should be killed with some kind of morality and decency. I think they also use cats as a source of animal feed. I saw scenes that kept me awake at night, cats thrown alive into vats of boiling water. Terrible.
