Poll question: Anyone moving out of the country?
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 10:51 PM by fenriswolf
just wondering if the events of the past year (or the past 6 hehe) have caused you to think about moving. especially those who have no hope for a decent POTUS in the upcoming election.

1. How many cowar --er--, uh, people, did that after the 2004 election?
How many people followed through with those threats to leave the country and cut and run from the fight?

5. How nice of you to call people cowards.
I know a few LGBT folks who moved to Canada because they were tired of holy rolling rednecks living off their tax money but denying them rights.

They are hardly cowards.

Just ask anyone that has been in an abusive relationship.

It takes a LOT more courage to leave the nation one grew up in, than it does to wallow in the inevitable decline....

2. Well, no, I'm trying to move out TO the country.
If I ever get the damned house finished on the farm, I will. But it's getting freaky hard to find the glass pop bottles I need to close in the windows.

13. In your local barrio you can find Mexican Coke and/or Pepsi
in glass bottles at stores and taquerias. I love it--no HFCS and it tastes like it used to here. I think they're a little smaller than the classic American pop bottles but they might do the trick.

25. Costco knows its market
American Coke tastes like crap compared to Mexican Coke, and once you drink it you won't go back (unless you're a big soda drinker who won't take the higher cost. Me? I drink single malt more often than I drink soda.)

In any case, your poll doesn't have enough choices. I'm staying here because I love the physical land where I live. It has nothing to do with loving "America", which is an artificial statist construct.

4. I stopped loving America
about the time I came to recognize "uninsurable" was going to be my permanent status as long as I live here.

It's hard to love somebody who hates you in return.

7. Definitely moving out of the country....
...but not until I retire in 8 years, 3 months and 5 days.

I could physically do it now, but it'll be so much easier with a retirement package to live on...

4 miles from the prettiest beaches in the country. Am going to put up some treehouses and solar panels. No TV, getting back to basics.

40. Congrats!! I'm looking at the Osa Peninsula...
...possibly near La Palma.

It'll be 8 years from now, but I'm planning a 800-900 sq. ft. house in the jungle, completely off the grid. Lemme know if you'd like to compare notes some time.

are thinking of retiring there, and they REALLY want me to look for a job over there, but I'm more Californian than they are. (I'm the only one who hasn't spent a substantial chunk of his life outside of this state.)

16. If an R takes the White House again, yes
I have a faint hope that things will improve under a Democratic president, otherwise, I'll be leaving in 2009. It'll mean my partner will have to leave his business and family behind, but I can't put my life on hold for another four years.

37. Can't Find a Job Here? Try Mexico. Or China.
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 08:55 AM by RFKin2008
With all of their labor force coming across our border to work for sharecropper's wages, surely there must be a labor shortage in mexico.

We Americans will take the jobs Mexicans don't want.

Also, China is hiring. Lots of factory jobs available, since they now manufacture everything America used to.

Follow the money...it's leaving the country. Might not be a bad time to think about following suit.

Load up the Sooner wagons and let's move `em out!!!

but, yes, I am trying to get out.

This is not a place where I want to grow old -- a country with no healthcare, massive debt, and the destruction of the middle class. I don't see hope really.

29. I should have left in 2000
My kids are getting older every day and I'm not going to see them stuffed into a life of Burger World and Slave-Mart. If my choice in the GE is between Hillary, and any of the other republicans running, I'm not even waiting for election day. I'm way tired of one party corporate rule.

38. Just got my Irish citizenship last week
and posted a thread about it. I applied after the 2004 election when I was in shock and determined to leave so politics was definitely the motivator to get the process started. But since I put in the application, I've had a lot of time to weigh what factors would be my biggest priority in any decision to move, and I'm not sure that those who structure that decision all around politics are being wise.

Family ties, intangibles about "homeland identity", cultural adjustments, language and more are at least as important as politics if people are really serious about making that jump.

I've lived in other countries for extended times (longer than a year for example) and you meet expats who have left their home country solely because of politics and they typically aren't the most happy.

Now, 4 years later, my family situation has changed and we'll stay put for the moment. This election IS important and will definitely be something I consider as part of the equation about staying or going. But now that I have the option to leave I'm relieved that it's a possibility.
