It seems "the surge" has worked.

Worked in the sense that by calming the violence, of deferring American casualties until after the election, in the sense that the issue of "Iraq" has disappeared as the political "third rail" for Republicans and has been replaced by a different issue - "the economy" - which at the very least allows them to compete on an even playing field with the Democrats in handing out dollars to anyone who will vote for them.

How many times can the Democratic Party snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?

The possibilities are endless.
