I just busted an airline pilot freeper-type on another board.
JJ and I have battled for a year or so. Tonight, he screwed up.

JJ and I usually fought about GWB and the Iraq war. JJ always touted his Viet Nam CV as a USAF F-111 pilot. He was very specific that he was flying the trail in 1966-67. I took that at face value.

Today he posted that he had been screwed by the new age 65 law for airline pilots. He was forced to retire in November, at age 60, under the old law.

"Wait!," sez I. Arithmetic 101. If JJ was 60 in 11/2007, then he was born 11/47. That put him at 19 in 1966. USAF required a college degree, plus UGPT, plus F-111 school. What a fucking lying bull-shitter!

ValuJet (aka AirTrans).

And I was a MD-80 captain (pre-717). I hope that sim is more reliable than the DDT was. DDT? Douglas Death Tube.

Also, lest it not be known: there is no MD-80 type rating. I hold a DC-9 type which covers the MD-80 series. I'm not sure about the 717.

7. Another wanna be Sgt Rock, with a knife in his teeth. But first you have to put your ass in the
grass; and then you can see if you can be Sgt Rock.

You're there, the enemy is there, the knife is in it's sheath. Just clinch that steel between those jaws and run at the machine guns. You get the image. Image what guts it took for John Kerry to turn his boat into a night time machine gun ambush. I don't think he got to the part with the knife, but he got the part that says if you run you die, if you charge you might live. Wanna war hero ... there's one.

18. Some have estimated that as many as six times as many as actually served claimed to.
According to some, there was a (telephone? CPS?) survey back in the early 80s in which 5-6 times as many claimed to be Viet Nam veterans as there were alive that actually served.

There were about 2.7 million of us who were awarded a Viet Nam Service Medal ... and less than 1/3rd of us remain alive.

25. I can't personally confirm any such research, though.
I've tried to find reputable citations for any such survey and haven't found it. There are any number of such estimates on individual Veteran websites, though. From my own experience, there has always been a seeming overabundance of "my uncle" or "my friend" or "my brother" references. I really don't think any of my relatives or close friends would attempt to posture themselves as 'experts' based on knowing me. It seems far too much of a stretch ... especially since we (well, at least *I*) mostly shut up after coming back and rarely brought up the subject of being a Viet Nam vet. In the 70s, that was like being a leper.

38. Was it really? My neighbors down the street had a house.
There were about eight of 'em, all just back. They taught me to play gin rummy and lived to regret it. The whole place was organized around being back. I was pretty young though, maybe wouldn't have noticed what they might have been going through that went over my 16 year old head.

That house was a way station. Corner of Winchester and Campbell Ave. Those were some great guys, TahitiNut.

31. I should have put 2+2 a year ago.
It never crossed my mind to do the arithmetic. It should have. Many of my old ex-Braniff buddies from the Piedmont days flew in Viet Nam in the mid-60s. They were 23-25 then. So they had to retire in 2000-2002, which they did.
I was younger. I hit 'Nam in 1970-71, and I took the quick track: ARMY Warrant Officer. No college degree required. I did luck out in fixed-wing, and in the P-2 unit. But that was luck, not skill or beauty.
However, I hate a fucking liar. Especially about something as close to my heart as what we went through in Viet Nam.

61. Man, oh man...
Reading of your experience brought back some memories. My mother was the company
secretary for the 4th W.O.C. of the 4th Infantry Division (Airmobile) in the early
'70's at Fort Wolters,TX. I think I was 10 or so, and I shall never forget those men.
Flying helicopters is risky under the best conditions. In a combat situation well,
let's just say they earned every fucking cent of that combat pay. I was privileged
to have known them, though being a kid I didn't realize how much so at the time.
I do now. IMHO, people who lie about their service dishonor those who did serve.

So I post several articles telling how the military stationed overseas has limited access to the internet and they can't access youtube or myspace or DISCUSSION BOARDS.

This was on a band message board.

Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 12:55 AM by Hobarticus
It sounded funky to me. I remembered the Aardvark initially went to 'Nam for testing, crashed a few times, then back out, then back in, much later. The F-111 wasn't even in-theater in '66 and '67.

I was right. Here's Wikipedia:

After early testing a detachment of six aircraft were sent in March 1968 to Southeast Asia for Combat Lancer testing in real combat conditions in Vietnam. In little over a month, three aircraft were lost and the combat tests were halted. It turned out that all three had been lost through malfunction (primarily with the terrain-following radar), not by enemy action.

September 1972 saw the F-111 back in Southeast Asia, participating in the final month of Operation Linebacker and later the Operation Linebacker II aerial offensive against the North.

I flew B-17s out of Pusan, defending the Perimeter against those suicidally brave hordes of Mongols. It was pretty rough. The agility of those Fokker Triplanes is incredible. Fortunately our F-18 Hornets and P-51 Mustangs were able to keep those Me109 and Mirage fighters off our backs while us and the B-1Bs pounded the crap out of them!

What?

protecting SE Texas from a possible NVA attack. Cheney flew a bar stool in Wyoming for 8 years during the war.

I don't know why repubs lie about their military service. I was drafted during Vietnam but spent most of the two years in Washington, DC and have never told anyone otherwise. There was this one guy who told me he was in 'Nam during TET. Strange, considering he graduated from high school in 1971 and then later went into the Army during the early days of VOLAR. I didn't say anything to embarrass the guy because he was a veteran, but why would he tell such a big lie?
