Technical College's 'White Ad' Causes Stir
Board President Says School Received Calls


JANESVILLE, Wis. -- Blackhawk Technical College officials created an unintentional stir recently with an ad featuring a family whose last name is White.

The publication calls the Janesville school "the perfect fit for the White family."

The line on the cover caused a bit of an uproar, even though "White" was capitalized.

College board President Eric Larson said that people who proofread the cover beforehand didn't think twice about it.

School officials said that the college did receive a number of phone calls about it, but most callers were simply pointing out how the line could be misinterpreted.

3. This seems to be a reaction based on the capitalization of regular nouns:

I see people do it thusly: Black rights, Black voters, Black neighborhoods, and so forth. People sometimes do this for Gay rights and Gay marriage, as well as Women's rights and other words. I've seen all three of my own examples, even on this board. All three are, grammatically speaking, incorrect, but people do it nonetheless.

It's annoying, and I bet the people objecting to this ad are the same people who regularly do what I demonstrated above. If you're not in the habit of ascribing the status of the proper noun to words that aren't proper nouns, the ad doesn't raise even the tiniest stir.

5. I used to work at that school.

Its Wisconsin- mostly white, but a lot of blacks attending that school and I can see how people would take it the wrong way. Just yesterday there was an incident here in Madison/Monona where a black high school student is being harassed at school and then a dead deer was left on the hood of his family's car. There are racists everywhere.

The jokes about how he feels about "the Blacks" are just too damn funny...that show is freakin' hysterical.
