Reid Renews Call for Extension to Surveillance Bill
Paul Kiel
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/005116.php

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has a busy week ahead of him. And near the top of the list is somehow getting a surveillance bill through the Senate in the next week. On February 1st, the administration's Protect America Act expires.

When he tried to get a thirty-day extension to that date last month, Republicans blocked it. So this morning he said on the Senate floor that he'd try again. The time pressures are real, he said, and suggested that even if the Senate were to somehow pass a bill, it would be mighty difficult to get it through the House and to the president's desk before February 1st. The Senate itself will be a high hurdle, with Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) filibustering over a retroactive immunity provision on the one hand and Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) saying that the authority for warrantless wiretapping stems from the Constitution on the other.

"Failure to extend the present law for one month could lead to the laws no longer being something that guides what happens in this country," Reid said, adding "some may want that."

Stay tuned.

"Any Dem is better than any republican"
"Stop criticizing our own"
"Am I on the right board?!"
"I'm so sick of this Dem-bashing"

7. We can be upset with our leaders. That's something that's allowed. Unlike the R's demand that
everyone toe the line and have taken seven and a half years to even mention that Bush is worthless or worse.

There were plenty of unhappy Democrats about various things during Clinton's presidency, although we recognized he was skilled at governance and he had, and still has, natural leadership qualities.

I'll take the Dem platform over the R's corruptness any day. And, Democratic politicians who've stayed to the left of the R's are seeing great benefit in that.

5. Chris Dodd is a Democrat, and he's threatening a filibuster because of telecom immunity provisions.
He wants those stripped from the bill. If they haven't broken any laws, why do they need legal immunity?

Immunity is what it is, protection from the prosecution and consequences of breaking the law.

21. Very good idea.

I am sick to death of the primaries. I am voting Edwards. And, I will choke down my own bile voting Clinton or Obama, if they win the nomination for the general election.

13. Someone unconfuse me.
If they don't extend this by Feb. 1st. the Protect America act expires. Doesn't this then simply go back to the original Fisa provisions? What would be so bad about that?

16. Of course there is that,
but I have a really bad feeling about this. What is it we don't know, or is it what is it Reid doesn't want us to know?

19. I'm sorry about your bad feeling. I think there's plenty Reid doesn't want us to know, but
the feeling I get isn't really bad, it's really reality. And, any chess player would have never let themselves get in this position.

17. Just as trustworthy as you
were with the Phase II Reid.

What the hell did you do with that report, take it out and bury it behind the White House cafeteria someplace? Enjoyed your phony tirade to shut down the Senate over it. Really suckered me in on that charade.

Another loser that makes me want to kick windows.

25. They do NOT want the current version. Mitch, the bitch, is trying to get immunity
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 10:12 PM by MasonJar
for all the evildoers like Bush, Cheney and AT&T. Never ever trust Mitch McConnell to do anything reasonable and worthy. And do I know, since he has purported to be my senator for 40 or so years. Reid is not impressive either since he is pushing the wrong version. Why? Threats? Bribery? Collusion? Nothing else makes any sense. He must be inundated with reprisals or we will be exonerating a vicious group of lawbreakers.
