Sorry to the PM'ers. Sorry to the post responders that I cannot get back to. She is slipping. I drove down to Griffin, Ga, today .. and back. That was 400 miles. It was worth it. It was a good day for her. She remembered our house (here in Greenville) from her Thanksgiving visit.

She said today how much she loved the art work in our house .. especially the Kipniss. She is blind as a bat, but sharp as a tack. She went around the house with a magnifying glass .. literally .. Thanksgiving. And Dr. D. played the piano for her. She loved it!

Mother realized it was her first and last visit here. She is no dummy!

The light is on for Mother .. any time.
(Dr. D's piano visible through the French window to the left of front door)

12. DemoTex is one of the original DUers
Vietnam Vet. Pilot. Was at one time thinking about putting some of his INCREDIBLE stories together in a book. I'm curious if he was ever able to do any of that. Maybe he'll reply.

A good soul. His mother raised him right.

That she is blessed in the way that she goes. It sounds like the two of you have both been a gift for each other.

My dad died five years ago - age of ninety. Woke up and wanted ice cream for breakfast and for whatever reason, my mom dished it up.

He ate it, said what a fabulous meal it was, took a nap and died in his sleep within the hour.

Family told me how awful they felt that he ws alone in the room when he went. But really, it is not possible to die alone. Someone on the other side comes and gets you.

If you are slowly Dying, you can be dying alone over the weeks and months.

But when you slip away, you are always met by someone or many others. It is one of thel essons I have learned from working hospice.

14. I'm so sorry.
My mom's 86 and not slipping, exactly. But losing her whole generation and expecting that she'll be next or maybe the one after.

And people keep telling her she's not allowed to go. Which makes her all huffy. She's the...tent pole, the lynch pin, the touchstone for so very many.

It's unimaginable.

She had also lost her sight and her hearing. I could pull her into the present if I had to, but letting her wander in the past was far kinder.

It's awful when it happens, but you get used to it. Slowly.

29. What a beautiful house.
I'd take a magnifying glass to it too. Enjoy these last days, as painful as they are. Keeping your mind to the end is a beautiful thing and I so envy you this special window of time as my mother's mind slipped away for years before her body did. But I don't care how old you get, it's always hard to lose Mama. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts.

Is that Greenville NC or SC? I used to live in NC.

33. Best wishes to you DemoTex, and your family and your mother.
My mom died slowly (around a two year period). It all began with a cough she had and ended up with weekly blood transfusions, some nursing and rehab care, and home healthcare. All I can say is enjoy your life with her because she is enjoying her life with you. She will be immortal because she will always be in your memory and your wonderful times together with stay with you fresh, each day.

I have no idea how to deal with it (fast-growing inoperable cancer). Thank you so much for sharing your own experience of this, it helps.

You have always been one of my fave DUers, have loved you for many years now. I don't know what else to say except I wish you both a good transition.

Thank you again, and all my best wishes for both of you.

49. I'm so sorry... for both you and DemoTex
My sincere sympathy. Losing a beloved parent is so painful... whether expected as in DemoTex's case or, as in your case (it sounds like the diagnosis came out of the blue), suddenly. I'll be thinking about you both.

Have you contacted hospice, scarletwoman? They would be extremely helpful, not just to your mother but to you as well, and emotionally as much as physically.

What truedelphi said in #30 is true... there's someone waiting on the other side. (At the very least, it's true that the dying often feel the presence of loved ones who've died before them--they may see them, even hear them sometimes. As far as I know it's universally experienced as a comfort, even though to those not in the process of dying it sounds like it could be a little eerie.)

I'll just say, being one of the "woo woo" types so generally denigrated here, that I *know* my mother will be joining many loved ones on the other side. I'm totally down with that.

Thank you sincerely for your kind words,
sw

Sounds like she was a heckuva mom who raised a son who mirrors her in spirit. I was very close to my mom so I know how tough this is. Sounds like she had some very good last days. That is one thing I will always treasure is that my mom who had gotten sick with cancer (fortunately she didn't suffer long) had a very good Saturday with me before she slipped in to a coma the next day and died near midnight.

Again my best to you and your mom and I know you will have a lot of great memories to treasure of her.
