Kaiser Permanente, coffee and miscarriage....
The sample size was 1000 women. Is this considered a large enough sample to support the claims that have been on TV all day?

Kaiser Permanente is an HMO. My cynicism towards the health insurance mess in this country is such that I must cast a jaundiced eye on these loudly taunted claims.

If coffee was such a serious risk, don't you think someone would have NOTICED by now? Is it possible that Kaiser P. is looking for ways to pay less for the services required when a woman miscarries by claiming it's her own fault if she drank coffee?

(No. I don't think my tinfoil hat is too tight)

1. Kaiser sucks, but your aluminum beanie might be a bit snug.
First of all, they're not going to get out of paying for an exam, D&C or anything else because one drank coffee, any more than they could if you miscarried due to an accident and weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As for coffee during pregnancy- drug free gestation is just a good idea all around.

2. Interesting, My most nauseous pregnancy was one in which I
very much wanted a cup of joe and a pastry, and I was willing to fight for it! I lost my appetite for eggs and cereal. One of the conclusions in the study was that women who are very nauseous, that is, having strong hormones for maintaining the pregnancy, wouldn't have much appetite for coffee.

8. I was the same way. I love coffee, but when I was pregnant,
even the smell of it nauseated me.

If the study IS true, perhaps Mother Nature has a built-in protection for pregnant women.

4. I don't know that Kaiser Permanente could use this information
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 06:58 PM by Arkansas Granny
but elsewhere in the article that I read it said:

While there has been much research into caffeine and miscarriage - some of it dating back to the 1960s - no studies have been definitive, and the effect of caffeine, and coffee in particular, on miscarriage has been a subject of controversy.

If they've been looking for cause and effect of caffeine on pregnancy for over 40 years, why has the link just been discovered. I would have to see more research on a larger sample group before I accept the findings of one study.

5. I love coffee but the thought of it made me sick when I was pregnant
Always thought it was kind of a protected instinct, wonder if most people are like that?

12. any kind of "grill" smell, like diner smell absolutely NOT!!
I could smell the grill from the bottom floor of the restaurant of the office building I worked in...it came in through the vents at lunch time I used to have to smell these little vials of peppermint oil to stop from getting sick!! After I had the baby, I didn't even notice that smell any more. So funny.
