Soldier can get parole after 10 years after murdering Iraqi family
Edited on Fri Feb-23-07 11:42 AM by quinnox
Did anyone see this story? A soldier raped an Iraqi girl and then covered it up by killing her entire family and received a 100 year sentence, ok, all well and good, but then it went on and said that he can be eligible for parole after ten years?!

I have great respect for our soldiers, unlike some on the left, but this is not justice if he can commit cold blooded murder and get out in ten years.

2. I heard the story, too.
But I think they said he could be eligible for parole if he testified against the others involved. They are making a deal because they need his evidence.

13. The only disrespect I've ever seen here was for soldiers like this
one.

4. Being eligible for parole, and actually getting parole are 2 different things
And it confuses a lot of people.

Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan have been "eligible" for years now. They get a sham parole hearing, but they know they ain't going anywhere.

I know guys who were "eligible" after 7 years, but they've been locked up for 30 and counting.

5. He ain't no soldier. He's a rapist and a murderer.
"I have great respect for our soldiers, unlike some on the left," Like the rest of us don't. This little strawman was not necessary.

6. I don't know.
He could probably get out in less in the civilian court system.

Still, it just goes to show that a system that could find OJ innocent is capable of just about any miscarriage of justic.

7. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed.
I'm not denying that this was a horrible crime but the outrage confuses me. Why is it honorable to kill Iraqi families when your following orders but there's something about this case that makes it punishable with a prison sentence?
I think its naive to suggest that rape isn't wide spread in this war, as it is in ALL wars. There's a massive amount of death and depravity going on in Iraq right now and it seems like one instance was picked almost at random and called a crime. If this is a crime, then the entire war is a crime.

17. I agree war is horrible and crime happens there too but
this group of soldiers planned and plotted to 'get' this girl.
They murdered her and her family, including a five year old little sister.

They weren't "following orders" by a longshot.

20. Ok
I just don't see the presence of absence of "orders" making rape and murder any more or less morally acceptable. Bush planned and plotted to "get" an entire nation.

9. Who, "on the left", doesn't "support the troops"?
If you aren't a right-winger, you have certainly let them frame the issue in your mind...

You can't make a blanket statement like that, and not expect to be called on it...

16. Who said he'd actually get parole?

Isn't he in a military prison?
That's harder than a regular prison, from what I understand.
I'll check back in about ten years....
