AP: Is your coat fur fake, or is it Fido?

There is a thread relating to this in LBN, but I thought
I'd share it here.

WASHINGTON - That fur trim on your jacket that you think is fake? Tell it to Fido. An animal advocacy group says its investigation has turned up coats — some with designer labels, some at higher-end retailers — with fur from man's best friend. Some retailers were set scrambling to pull the coats from shelves, take them off Web sites and even offer refunds to consumers.

The Humane Society of the United States said it purchased coats from reputable outlets, such as upscale Nordstrom, with designer labels — Andrew Marc, Tommy Hilfiger, for example — and found them trimmed with fur from domestic dogs, even though the fur was advertised as fake.

"It's an industrywide deception," said Kristin Leppert, the head of the Human Society's anti-fur campaign.

1. Oh shit
This would only occur at the high end of the spectrum wouldn't it? Not something you got from JC Penney?
I would hate to think my fake fur was once a pup.

5. Actually, JC Penny was named earlier in continuing to sell
coats made of raccon dogs, a wild canine species found in China...

Sorry to bear bad news...

7. I looked at my coat
It said 76% modacrylic, 24% acrylic.
My coat is old, by the way, I got it in 2002. I didn't see anything about raccoon on the label, but it WAS made in China. :(

13. You are probably ok...
But those who buy those fur apres ski boots-- the ones that look sort of like they were created from an Inuit Indian design--are dog fur... It used to slay me to see otherwise environmentally concerned skiers going down to the shops in Aspen, Vail, or even the less upscale Breckinridge and buying these things. I doubt they knew or gave it a second thought...

11. Every Saturday, a group pickets the upscale Denver fur shops
in North Cherry Creek. I seriously don't know who keeps them in business, as I've never seen someone walk inside one of these stores (maybe they sneak in from the back).

But, during our blizzards of a few weeks ago, I came across two snooty women wearing full length furs coats, while my doggie girl and I were out walking under a raggedy unbrella and my standard goretex. So, totally unapologetic were these women, that they had the nerve to walk toward me and my dog as though they wanted to pet her.... I mumbled something to the effect that she NEEDS her coat as we made a beeline away so as to avoid a major confrontation... I will never understand people like this... WOuldn't you think they'd at least be a little embarrassed wearing such a thing?

15. Not everyone shares your view that it is wrong.
I don't wear it for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the vanity aspect. On the other hand, I have leather shoes and a few other leather items and a lot of wool. And I eat meat. I can't really draw a conceptual distinction between fur and leather or for killing for one purpose but not the other. I don't accept that humans cannot morally use animal products.

21. Mink and other fur-species are not eaten for the meat
and they are frequently raised under cruel circumstances. Someone earlier posted a documentary exposing the Chinese practice of skinning some of these animals while still alive or after having been scorched with boiling water.... Fur coats symbolize this cruelty in a way they might not have many decades ago.

I too eat meat on occasion and wear leather shoes. I also am not opposed to hunting. The difference is that the animal is consumed and not wasted for vanity purposes.

27. That's true.
If all these fur insdustries went out of business tomorrow, I sure wouldn't cry about it. Polyester is so much better in so many ways, anyhow.

31. It's the treatment of the animals & method of killing

Fur farms are notorious for having brutal conditions for
the animals to live in-for example cages that are way too
small. These animals are just products to these people.
They only care about profits.

Skinning the animals alive and electrocution are two
popular methods of killing them (don't want to hurt the
fur!). I could go on, but it's too disturbing.

As far as wool goes, some lambs live great lives, while
some are sheared 'til they're bloody. Wool from Australia
should be boycotted! Meat? There are farms that care about
their animals welfare and happiness until slaughter time. They
let them out to pasture rather than shutting them up in dark,
cramped pre-fabbed barns. It's usually the small family owned farms
that practice humane farming.

8. What's the big deal?
It's an efficient use of a dead animal. Proper labeling would seem in order, but other than that, why not wear dog fur?

32. Only if he's alive when he's skinned.
Or boiled alive. That is after being kept his whole life in a cage so small he can't turn around in it.

Then maybe he'll see what the big deal is.

I used to have a pair of slippers that were made of real rabbit fur. Actually, they were real rabbits. Unfortunately, they did not find my feet too comfortable and usually hopped away.
