NYT editors undercut Kristol’s column on Iraq

NYT editors undercut Kristol’s column on Iraq.

In his New York Times column yesterday, Bill Kristol trumpeted Iraq’s new de-Baathification law, noting that Democrats are no longer able to “deprecate the military progress and political reconciliation taking place on the ground by harping on the failure of the Iraqi government to pass the benchmark legislation.” But in today’s paper, The Times’s editorial board sharply rebukes Kristol’s claims on the de-Baathification law:

What should have been heralded as an accomplishment, however, may only serve to further reinforce the bumbling nature of President Bush’s ill-conceived adventure in Iraq.

No one, it seems, has a clear sense of what the law will do. Some suggest it could actually exclude more former Baathists than it lets in — a sure-fire way to fuel political tensions rather than calm them.

1. Experts at the opposite effects of what they say they want.
The very definition of "Republican."

2. So ... Kristol's function at the NYT is to provide fuel for internal flame wars? Bizarre.

3. The Iraq Army, guard and local police are rounding up
civilians that are of different tribes and that disagree with the way their government is being run. It is the opposite of democracy.
Free speech is being suppressed. Iraq will end up with another dictator like Saddam. Full circle here they come. That is just one of the reasons the so-called surge appears to be working. :dem:

4. Hiring Kristol was a two-fer
See, his once-a-week abortion of a column will generate another full time position at the Times to issue corrections and clarifications. This will also be a new experience for Kristol, who, as editor of his own publication, doesn't have to suffer such pedestrian indignities as fact checking.

No wonder he was such a hot property that the Times just had to snap him up!
