If you'll pardon another "Eyes on the Ball Folks" post...
Of course we're all wrapped up in the presidential race. It's big news. The outcome has serious consequences. And media coverage (such that it is, blech!) is concentrating on it. But there is another branch of the US government at stake this year.

With congressional approval ratings at an all time low and the GOP's reputation in tatters, this is a splendid opportunity to improve those margins in the House and Senate. I know that in my congressional district we are feeling the excitement of the first competitive race in 14 years! The GOP candidate is stumbling under the weight of the Shrub. After all he's carrying the man on his shoulders because his head is so far up his...... But the local Democrats also have a respected rational opponent who stands a chance for a change.

No U.S. Senate race in my state this time (yes, there are blessings to be had), but as we all know, the U.S. House is in play.

Please don't forget your state and local candidates and your U.S. congressional candidate. They still really need our help. My top two (well three with a Gore write-in) presidential candidates are no longer in the running so the results of the presidential primaries are a ho-hum to me. I'm turning more of my attention to my congressional candidate. Off to go send him some money and get a call list from his campaign.

Cheers!

3. Yep, that's pretty sad. My district has traditionally been in that position.
I feel for you!

4. Bravo...Can't Be Said Enough
:kick:

I've been blissfully uncommitted as far as the Presidential beauty contest goes...based on the long time fact that by the time the primary got to my state the nomination was all but decided. I'm in a Feb 5th state now, so we'll see if things change this year. In the meantime, I've spent most of my time and all my money on working with various local candidates...especially several key congressional districts. It's these smaller races that mean the most and where your work can do the most good.

A reminder that whomever wins this election will be in control for the 2010 Census and control of state houses are a must if we're to get a fair and honest redistrict...get rid of the DeLay gerrymandering. Also, the more Democratic Secretary of States mean fairer vote counts (no more Ken Blackwells) and Governors make our states even stronger and builds up the reserve of future leaders.

Congress is the biggie. While we control, we have a golden opportunity to pick up even more repugnican seats...but right now many of us are working at helping promote progressive candidates...many who are in primary fights with DLC and DINOs...and then its on to winning not only a larger majority but a more progressive/liberal one that forces House leadership to be more responsive to our goals...ones that are far more achievable with a Democrat in the White House.

Yes...keep the eye on the ball...once Silly Season is over, the real battle begins.

Cheers...
