Statement from Senator Obama:

You have seen a tone on the Democrat side of the campaign that has been unfortunate. I want to stipulate a couple of things. I may disagree with Senator Clinton and Senator Edwards on how to get there, but we share the same goals. We all believe in civil rights. We all believe in equal rights. They are good people. They are patriots....

I don't want the campaign at this stage to degenerate to so much tit-for-tat, back-and-forth, that we lose sight of why we are doing this.

Obama said he wants to send "a strong signal to my own supporters that let’s try to focus on the work that needs to get done. If I hear my own supporters engaging in talk that I think is ungenerous or misleading or unfair, I will speak out forcefully against it...

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton have historically been on the right side of civil rights issues. They care about the African American community.... That is something I am convinced of. I want Americans to know that is my assessment. http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0108/Obama_putting_out_the_fire.html

Statement from Senator Clinton which followed shortly thereafter:

"Over this past week, there has been a lot of discussion and back and forth - much of which I know does not reflect what is in our hearts.

"And at this moment, I believe we must seek common ground.

"Our party and our nation is bigger than this. Our party has been on the front line of every civil rights movement, women's rights movement, workers' rights movement, and other movements for justice in America.

"We differ on a lot of things. And it is critical to have the right kind of discussion on where we stand. But when it comes to civil rights and our commitment to diversity, when it comes to our heroes - President John F. Kennedy and Dr. King - Senator Obama and I are on the same side.

"And in that spirit, let's come together, because I want more than anything else to ensure that our family stays together on the front lines of the struggle to expand rights for all Americans." http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=5194

6. Ahh. Wise move on their part. Edwards was about to clean up the floor with the both of them.
by staying above the fray and maintaining his cool.

Now let's see if they keep to their little cozy "make nice" pledges.

9. It ain't over until the fat lady sings. Let's see them talk issues, and those
with the weakess defense will resort back to distraction, because they cannot win on the issues

20. Go piss in your own punch bowl. Maybe you don't think Iraq is important
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 10:01 PM by still_one
but that is a major issue along with the economy and jobs, all related to Iraq and oil

I have no idea who you are referring to with "mcguirombeeson"

It is the issues I want talked about, not someone upset up with water in their eyes, or someone who took drugs years ago, or personal attacks

you can be sure it will be the issues, and those who ANSWER the questions the best that I will vote for

not those who evade answers to hard questions

over 100000 people have been killed in Iraq, because of an illegal war we started

I'm a newb.. and i'm sure after a few 1:00am posts I probably haven't been the most polite myself - so i'll be the first to hop on the new Obama/Clinton Happiness bandwagon.

18. awww.... bummer!
just when it was getting really fun!

NOT!

Good for them. About time. I have a feeling they realized they were about to be like the tigers in that old children's story which must remain nameless, chasing each other around and around the tree until they just blurred and turned into butter...

leaving the protagonist to gather up all his stuff and go on his merry way

if perchance there is anything to be learned and/or gained from this, maybe a tough scrimmage makes the big game that much easier

19. Yesssssssss! Very smart move, on both their parts. I'm so glad they've done that.
I actually feel proud of both of them. I'm happy they stopped to focus on what's important and did not allow
themselves (and the public) to get distracted from the economy and the war.
A toast to them both!

21. All I want is for them to show him the same respect that they would show
any other candidate. They've made some outrageous accusations and personal attacks against him. Never in my life have I seen Democrats trying to destroy someone like they've been doing. They can destroy Obama. But in the end they will destroy the Democratic party (again) and themselves (again).

32. They DON'T "share the same goals."
Pretending that their differences aren't important isn't good for us--but it's good for them, and would save them a lot of work making promises to address the issues.
