Poll question: A Modest Proposal - Early Primaries Should Be in States With The Highest Unemployment
How about scheduling all future primaries in reverse order of the level of state unemployment?? This year, Michigan should then have gone first.

Just a straw poll to vent some pique since ...

5. Erm....
The unemployed are found mainly in states with large populations. Not sure I get your point.

6. Good idea. But, I think it can be safely placed on the "Fat Chance" shelf.
We surely wouldn't want the people most effected by decisions made by politicians to have first crack determining who's going to decide whether they starve.

7. I tend to think that those who voted for the 2nd choice weren't kidding.
That's a shame.

8. Other: Start in the Right to Work states like mine. Make even the RRRepublics have to
answer for it on a grand scale and watch those who continually vote against their best interests change their ways...

9. I would like to see a NATIONAL Primary day
All states voting on the same day. Then delegates can duke it out at the convention.

All this, 'you can't have your primary before our's' bullshit is just that..... bullshit.

And why should voters have to decide candidates 6-7 months before the convention and almost 10 months before the actual election? Reason, IMHO, money! The PR firms and advertising firms make a huge amount of bucks by this long and drawn-out primary 'season'.

12. I like it. There have got to be LOTS of formulae that would result
in a better system for this one...

It at least ought to rotate through the states.

15. "It at least ought to rotate through the states."
And if it DOESN'T ... it'd be even MORE interesting, wouldn't it?

Can you imagine them coming back after four years, eight years, twelve years, sixteen years ... ?

The Secret Service would probably be VERY busy.

14. Highest unemployment is most likely in red states
Let's face it. Republicans vote against their own economic self interests if a candidate says the word "Jesus" enough times in a speech.

17. The highest unemployment rate is here ... in Michigan. (People can't afford to follow jobs to Asia.)
You BET the GOP shills are running around and selling the snake oil. Yup.

But ... where are the "champions of labor"? Where are the "leading" Democratic candidates?

Nowhere to be seen. You see, they're ignoring the Michigan Primary vote and they WON'T be accepting delegates from Michigan at the covention.

The message? It's "Who Cares What You Think?" ... the Cheney/Bush attitude, in spades.

16. it might be hard to decide that a year in advance
The exact dates for Iowa and New Hampshire were set fairly recently, I believe. But, everyone has known what states would be early for a long time. That's necessary if the early states are going to provide what is supposed to be their advantage -- the ability for the candidates to spend time meeting the voters face to face.

When the DNC was deciding which states to let me "early" states, they called for proposals. I don't know if the Michigan state party put one in or not (I know that Florida didn't, which is part of the reason I put the blame for them losing their delegates on the state party).

I imagine that SC and Nevada got picked because of their relatively high proportions of African American and Latino voters. If they tried, Michigan might have had a shot because of what I believe is a relatively high proportion of union voters, if not because of the high unemployment.
