It's a hell of a lot worse than not wearing a hair net if you ask me.

My daughter's boss wouldn't let her call in sick and she's running a fever and been vomiting all day.

1. It's a violation of the common sense code
Won't it be apparent to the customers and won't they sort of not approve?

What a moran that boss is.

4. We think alike.
That's exactly what I told her.

There's no telling how many other employees and patrons she's going to make sick.

6. I worked in restaurants
the great thing is that there are lots of them. Working in restaurants taught me humility and how to tell people (managers, co workers) to get
Fuc%ed. She should tell them she is not coming in. If they fire her she can get another job. Either way she needs another job.

Good luck.

13. He's an idiot
who will deserve his own trip to the ER when he gets it and gets dehydrated as well as having the board of health swoop in and test everybody in the place for Hep A, which a large outbreak of stomach flu traced to a restaurant will be considered to be until everybody gets tested.

She needs to call her asshole boss and tell him what she saved him in terms of hassles from restaurant inspectors by not going in.

The worst thing that will happen is that she will need to find another humiliating bad job at a shit restaurant.

Which was very effective. :D

She told me she's going to be looking for another job anyway, but at least she'll get this weeks tips to cover her bills which are currently due.

15. I used to work at Applebees as a line cook
and they once had me close on New Years eve (2am minimum) and open the next morning (6:30am). That's completely illegal, so I pointed it out and was immediately fired. I let them think about it for a day and they hired me back because they knew I was right.

I guess my point is, restaurants take advantage of their younger staff all the time, mostly just because they can (high staff turnover). It's your daughter's choice whether to stand up to them or not, but be prepared for the consequences.

20. Oh my God!!! It bloody well should be...
I'm just now getting over an industrial strength dose of flu, creepin' epizootie, Captain Tripps, something and I KNOW I CAUGHT IT WHILE ON A SHORT HOLIDAY TO THE NORTH COAST OF CALIFORNIA where we ate at a casino where one of the waitstaff AND (forgive me for using the language I am going to to describe the extremely NASTY old woman who made me and another 8 people I know sick but I am so ANGRY that anyone would come out to a public dining place coughing up a lung, snotting and sneezing the entire time!!), some old Geezer made sure to contaminate the entire place.

I haven't had anything like this for at least 26 years. I got chills so bad that my teeth were chattering. I was under two duvets, had on sweats AND a coat, sitting in front of a roaring fire. I haven't had a meal since NEW YEARS DAY. EVERYTHING tastes awful

If I were your daughter, I would drop a dime on that guy with the Health Department.

23. There's no such animal as the "stomach flu". Flu, aka influenza,
is a RESPIRATORY virus with minimal effects on the gastrointestinal tract. I assume you are referring to the oft-misreported "flu-like" symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. These involve the gastrointestinal tract and NOT the respiratory tract, and are almost always due to rotavirus or norwalk virus, and these are HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. So IMHO (and what the hell do I know with my degree in microbiology, lol?) it is completely insane to let any person with vomiting and/or diarrhea work in food service. Period.

Oy. I think I'll keep eating my wonderful scratch cooking at home, thank you very much.

in terms of board of health harassment if she didn't go in.

Trust me, a cluster of cases of any GI bug from a restaurant gets their attention really fast!

All food handlers have to be certified (ie: tested on a video presentation to be allowed to handle food)and they are quite emphatic that no one work while they're even the slightest bit sick.

That being said, it happens all the time in the food business because there isn't a lot of properly trained redundant staff just hanging around in case of emergency. If she was puking and running a fever, however, the boss is definitely in the wrong. It is probably a violation but if she doesn't go to a doc and get a 'letter', there is no way to defend herself if the boss was to act punitively for a 'no show'. On one hand, I've known of many 'no shows' who did not get fired because management knew it could not replace them quickly enough. On the other hand, if the boss is that much of an ass, finding a job at another restaurant might be the answer. You don't say if the restaurant is corporate or not, but I have spent a happy if slightly poorer career working (cook and baker)in small 'mom-and-pop' type restaurants. They simply tend to treat you better. You are not merely a quarterly bonus in their eyes. If this guy is corporate, his bonuses might depend on the 'attendance' of his employees and he might be reluctant to let them go for any reason.

edit to add:OOps later in te thread you mention Chili's...they have a pretty bad rep. Olive Garden, TGIF, Denny's etc are no better, they all subvert proper policy with this idiotic bonus bull*. I quit my only corporate employment when they refused to allow me to go to the hopital for a serious burn which was not even my fault. They refused because they would lose their 'no accident' bonus that month or whatever. I left and went anyway. They didn't fire me but I never returned. Tell her that when she gets to looking to go hit up the privately owned upscale and fine dining restaurants. She will be treated better, get better tips and wil eat better food. Wish her luck from an old cook!
