1. Could be because he is no longer a maverick.

2. I have also heard that it is his turn...
as though he is suppose to be the next in line for the presidency.

3. Maverick in the sense that he went against his party on one
issue--campaign finance reform. Not exactly a stand of courage, and he's gone around McCain-Feingold anyway. But the label sticks as long as pundits keep using it. Real mavericks in the party would be Ron Paul and Chuck Hagel, which is why they're marginalized.

5. A maverick is a cow, usually a calf, that high-tails it away from the herd
yanno, too young to know better, that kind of thing.

haha Pretty funny on lots of levels when applied to McCain. :hi:

6. Because, at times, in the past, he had said things or taken positions in distinction to the Repub
Party Line.

Example, his criticism of the pernicious influence of the Religious Right on American politics in 2000. Right On John! Except that now he's gone on to kiss the rings of all the fundie poobahs in preparation for this run, so screw him.

Unlike all the other Republican candidates, he comes out and says torture is wrong and we shouldn't torture people (what a courageous position, John! Except among Republicans, it actually IS a courageous position these days, this is where America is in 2008). Except when any votes come up about military commissions or whatever he'll still vote with his boys.

So fuck him, basically.

8. McCain's got a history of going against his party starting in the mid 90s...
He worked with John Kerry on learning the fate of MIA's in Vietnam, on campaign finance reform, pork barrel spending and a few other things. Of course this is all before he sold out and jumped on the bush bandwagon of warmongering.

He lost his maverick label when he sold his soul in '04.
