The sheriff did say the suspects lawyers had been shielding him...keeping the suspect from talking to civilian authorities.

He can be charged by both...usually it is one or another

Also, one can charge the rape and the sheriff can charge the murder

If the body is off base..and it seems it is...it's the sheriffs call

Marine guy just said primary jurisdiction remains with the sheriff

32. Her mom says she is a compulsive lier.
Mary Lauterbach has confirmed reports that her daughter is a compulsive liar. Last year, she alleged that she had been raped by a superior officer at Camp Lejeune. On Thursday, The Marine Corps Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that she had withdrawn the allegation and may have left the base and gone into hiding to avoid answering questions.

Other news reports said that Lauterbach said the investigation into her allegation “had gone sour.” Please check back for more on this developing story.

41. technically, it was her STEPmother
I am a stepmother myself, and I love my grown stepkids and my step grandchildren, although I never think of them as STEP children. But depending on the age that they both were when she married her father, they may have clashed in a lot of ways.

And I have not read one thing about the father. Has anyone heard anything?

Wouldn't it be nice to go missing, and have your own mother telling the cops that you're a liar? Thanks, Mom. Of course, it fits in so nicely and on so many levels with media narratives that preggos are nuts and women can't be trusted.

22. I've heard that, sadly. Seems like it's a well known fact that's
swept under the rug. I've heard that in regards to women soldiers overseas though it doesn't surprise me it's happening stateside.

This goes far beyond assault; I'm glad someone will be punished.

Sheriff: Major announcement expected today in missing Marine case

Raleigh, NC News & Observer

By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer

January 11, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The sheriff investigating the disappearance of a 20-year-old pregnant Marine said he expected a major break in the case today, after detectives finish interviewing the woman's roommate.

"He's going to answer some questions that I think will shed a lot of light on this case," Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said.

The roommate, Marine Sgt. Daniel Durham, isn't a suspect in the case. But authorities believe Durham to be the last person to speak with the missing woman, who is due to give birth in mid-February, and may have been monitoring the case while on a training mission in California.

.....

The Marine, who vanished last month before she was to testify in a military probe, had said she was sexually assaulted by a senior officer but that the investigation had gone sour, according to court documents.

.....

The documents state Naval investigators had struggled to investigate the woman's allegations because of inconsistencies in her account. Still, the court papers said the anticipated birth of the baby "might provide evidentiary credence to charges she lodged with military authorities that she was sexually assaulted by a senior military person."

The Associated Press had identified the missing Marine before the allegations of sexual assault became public. The AP generally does not identify people who allege they are victims of sexual assault.

Authorities said Thursday they planned to question the superior officer at Camp Lejeune she accused of rape. Her stepmother said the officer threatened the missing woman's career, and search warrants filed this week state the woman was facing a possible discharge from the Marine Corps. No reason was provided.

.....

Edited to add:

CNN, January 11, 2008

Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach last spoke to relatives in the Dayton, Ohio, area on December 14.

JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) -- Missing pregnant Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is dead, Onslow County sheriff said Friday.

The suspect in the case is Cpl. Cesar Armando Lauren, a fellow Marine whom Lauterbach had accused of sexual assault, Sheriff Ed Brown said at a news conference Friday.

Lauren is not in custody, Brown said, and a search is on for him.

He said investigators are looking for Lauterbach's body in a residential wooded area in Onslow County.

Brown said investigators just learned of Lauterbach's death Friday morning and he had expected a positive outcome in the case earlier in the day.

.....

Durham told police that Lauterbach was confined to bed most of the time because of her pregnancy and that she "was in no shape for extended outings," according to the reports.

.....

The police reports, however, said she was due on February 14 and did not show up for a prenatal medical appointment December 28.
Lauterbach's cell phone was found on a roadside near Camp Lejeune on December 20. Her car was found Monday in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, Brown said, and apparently had been there since December 15. The car was processed, he said, but nothing of value was found.

Investigators have said a withdrawal from Lauterbach's bank account was made on December 14 and there was "suspicious activity" on the account 10 days later. Police reports said Lauterbach's ATM card was used at a Marine Federal Credit Union by a man who attempted to cover the surveillance camera with a rag while he withdrew money from her account.
A search warrant released with the other documents Thursday seeks Western Union records, saying authorities have reason to believe Lauterbach may be receiving financial support through money transfers.

.....

Stories like this fill me with such despair.

young women that say Homicide (during pregnancy through the first year of the baby's life) is number either the first or second cause of death. I can't remember....and I think the other cause was car accidents???

Anyone know for sure?

Pregnancy can be dangerous to your health if papa isn't into responsibility.
