Pentagon: We "recorded the film and the sound separately, & then stitched them together" (Guardian)
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 09:01 AM by kpete
Unnamed Pentagon officials said on Wednesday that the threatening voice heard in the audio clip, which was released on Monday night with a disclaimer that it was recorded separately from the video images and merged with them later, is not directly traceable to the Iranian military.

Doubts grow over Iranian boat threats

· Pentagon climbdown over 'you will explode' video
· Mystery remains over where voice came from

Ed Pilkington New York
Friday January 11, 2008
The Guardian

Doubts intensified last night over the nature of an alleged aggressive confrontation by Iranian patrol boats and American warships in the Persian Gulf on Sunday, after Pentagon officials admitted that they could not confirm that a threat to blow up the US ships had been made directly by the Iranian crews involved in the incident.

Several news sources reported that senior navy officials had conceded that the voice threatening to blow up the US warships in a matter of minutes could have come from another ship in the region, or even from shore.

.....................

But the mystery remains of where the voice that apparently threatened to bomb the US ships came from. The Pentagon has said that it recorded the film and the sound separately, and then stitched them together - a dubious piece of editing even before it became known that the source of the voice could not, with certainty, be linked to the Iranian patrol boats.

..................

Despite growing doubts about what happened, the Bush administration continued to stand by claims of Iranian hostility. The defence secretary, Robert Gates, said the concern came from the "fact that there were five of these boats and that they came as close as they did to our ships and behaved in a pretty aggressive manner".

2. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! It's maddening how these asses operate!
K&R because this is important. It's the same BS these jerks always use. By the time the truth comes out, it's weeks or years later and no one leatns it. Only the original "incident" remains.

3. Not sure why
anyone would find that surprising. From my experience, U.S. Navy ships do not have synchronized video/audio equipment on their bridges like police cars. The photos of the supposed attack boats were taken from the bridge wing or other topside location. The radio transmissions were over the Bridge to Bridge radio, normally located inside the pilot house. There is no interconnection between the two.

4. Not sure why anyone here would be defending this bullshit
at this point.

"Pentagon officials admitted that they could not confirm that a threat to blow up the US ships had been made directly by the Iranian crews involved in the incident."

So, at the least, splicing audio of dubious origin with video of Iranian patrol ships operating in Iranaian territorial waters in a legal identification activity in the transit passage, was a dishonest act that seemed to be intended to create an international incident.

Do you want this administration to take us to war with Iran?

9. I am not defending anything
A lot of DUer's do not know the mechanics of how the incident was recorded and taped, thats all. As far as wanting a war with Iran, I would have preferred the last 30 years worth of Presidents (both Democrat and Republican) would have tried a whole hell of a lot harder to come to some diplomatic understanding and accommodation with the Iranian Govt. There is not need for war with those people.

5. "There is no interconnection between the two."
You're absolute correct...there was no interconnection at all. In fact, in the video clip the guy on the radio has a totally different voice, tone and cadence than the supposed same guy on the radio clip. Hmm. Don't you find that the least bit odd?

7. The voice in the American video didn't even have a Persian accent
He sounded like Dolf Lundgren or something.

Persians have a sing-sing accent and add syllables to English words. This is clear when the Iranian version of the video is viewed.

This whole thing is another American embarrassment in trying to provoke a war.

8. I'm tired of this bullshit.
Everything this administration puts out is suspect. I think the military is beginning to realize that its credibility is on the line and anything they supply to the WH is subject to manipulation. This administration will do anything to support its agenda. Colin Powell's treatment by these neo-conservatives should serve as an example to all in the military. He was used, his good name tarnished by an administration that has shown nothing but contempt for service, honor or truth. They don't give a shit about you or your families. They don't give a shit.

13. "All right, all right"
The man stood over the body, smoke curling from the end of his gun. "All right, all right," he said. "Maybe the guy wasn't actually breaking into my house, and was just walking by on the sidewalk. But he could have come running toward my house at any time. I had to chase him down and shoot him."

If the military wasn't involved and the Myth of Redemptive Violence so inextricably intertwined in this incident, the bully-boy aspect of it all would be quite clear. Instead, we're treated to endless justifications for our own nation's aggressive actions.

14. One more time
This administration will look you right in the eye and lie like a rug. They have an agenda of world domination and they will stop at NOTHING to achieve their goals. They have given away nuclear secrets to hostile nations, laundered money, dealt drugs to pay for their ventures, outed a CIA agent and her entire covert operation, fed guns and money to terrorists and had democratically elected leaders assasinated and installed fascist leaders in their place.

This government is as corrupt as a government can possibly get and nobody is doing anything about it.

God help us all.

15. Doesn't it bother anyone that we spend more on military & intelligence
Than all the other countries in the world combined, yet the Pentagon cannot confirm that a threat was made by the Iranian crews to blow up a U.S. ships?

Sure they can't, because they know.

17. Anyone who did not IMMEDIATELY recognize that audio "threat" as a prank or hoax
should have been thrown into an asylum for their own protection, or thrown into a brig for being a warmongering psychopath who would use even the lamest pretext to start a war. There are a lot in both categories. This evidence that these sickos include those commanding US Navy warships in the Persian Gulf is as scary as it is unsurprising. What a pathetic bunch of lowlifes and tools.

Always a new answer to the question of "How degraded and depraved can the US military become?"
