I propose a ban on "Grand Exit" posts
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 06:11 PM by Cronus Protagonist
I mean to say, if someone wants to leave, that's fine with me, but why do some of them have to grandstand their exit? If they're not coming back, what's the point in posting such drivel? So we can discuss them after they're gone? Huh? As if that matters a whit.

I say we need to ban them, not recommend them to the greatest post status. I mean, really, what's that all about?

If their post is to educate and transform, they ought to have the guts to hang around and help with the work of change or their claim of concern for DU is clearly bullshit. If their post is sour grapes, who the fuck cares? If their post is a "love ya, now I must leave ya" post, again, who cares?

Is there ANY kind of "TTFN" goodbye post that is worth reading? I say ban 'em. Ban 'em and delete them, not just lock, after all, if they're no longer a member, why leave their droppings around? If you're leaving, you ought to just leave. And if you care about DU, you ought to stay and fight the battle.

Is anyone with me?

Just my two cents

5. Except
It's difficult to know who-all might miss any particular poster. If a grand exit post bothers you, there is an "ignore" feature; you mighe be well advised to avail yourself of it.

11. I agree. If a leaving post bothers others, they don't have to read or reply.
It is nice to let everyone know why they are leaving. If "I'm leaving" posts bother someone, just ignore them. There are lots of posts and no one is compelled to read or reply to them all. It's nice to know when long time posters leave though.

;)

Actually, I agree with you.

People who post those are sometimes sincere in their desire to explain why they're stopping their posting activity, but much more often are disgruntled attention-seekers trolling for please-stay-we'll-miss-yous and fine-go-away-who-gives-a-shits. Either way, it doesn't matter, a response is a response.

9. I don't doubt the sincerity of some of the leavers
But really, if they're leaving, what's the point in leaving a negative epitaph? Also, I forgot how many times some members have "left for good" and came back. It's all getting out of hand.

I would be particularly drawn to my favorite type of post - 20 pages long, 900 links, and many, many blocks of blue text boxes. Something it obviously took hours to compose, then someone just says, "fuck you!"

And if you care about DU, you ought to stay and fight the battle.

Be part of the problem or part of the solution. That poster chose NOT to be part of the solution.

Hmmmmmm.... it is the high profile people's "goodbye" posts that get to hang around... one lower-tier writer comes to mind who left "forever" at least twice or more and came back each time. His grandstanding death-scene posts hung around like fetid crap for days after each dramatic "exit". I think some people just have to grab the limelight and when they have nothing to say, no more to offer, off they go on a "Royal" exit to boost their rep once more in readiness for the condescending "reluctant" come back story.

49. the thing is if they are some DUer who is well known then people will beg them to stay
and get greatest page status, however, if it's from some DUer who isn't as well known or not as "popular" then that poster will get the inevitable "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." DU like any institution has its favorites and if one of the favorites decides to leave they feel they owe an explanation which people would appreciate and bag them to "take a time out" or "please don't leave", but if it's a regular poster, not well known--nobody will care. I think people should care no matter who leaves and why they feel they must leave. Should there be a ban on such posts? I doubt it. I don't support banning free speech.

52.  Bring 'em on. I love to make fun of the self-absorbed "leavers."
I would miss an opportunity for some snarky DU banter about "pity-parties", "don't let the door...", "why do you we think we care?" and "how can we miss you if you won't leave?"

A ban on the drama kings/queens would definitely reduce the fun on DU.
