I have to say that I admired Huckabee on Colbert last night
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 02:49 PM by question everything
He was witty and funny and went along with whatever crazy ideas Colbert raised: like getting guns at SC - which is, apparently, easy - and selling them in NY as a way to raise funds. And for Colbert's personal one "consider it done."

"Rejecting" Colbert suggestion to put pneumatic tubes at the US-Mexico border to send back illegals. And, "standing" by his offer of the running mate post.

He was laughing at the crazy stuff that Colbert was saying and really appeared approachable.

1. I thought he showed quite a sense of humor
which I appreciated but he's still intolerable as a President

5. The thing now is to make sure people don't fall for the "I could have a beer with him" schtick all
over again

17. No fear. The Republican establishment
loath him and, really, he did come a distant 3rd in NH.

He may do OK in SC - isn't this where McCain lost because of the Evangelicals?

He knows this, which is why he freely offered the VP spot to Colbert.

3. He is probably a decent guy, hence the Republican establishment
is trying to tank him and get an establishment guy in there that will tow the line.

7. Heard he has one hell of a temper
As does Johnny Mac. As does Lord W. So the 'nice guy' routine is just that - a routine, not a reality.

10. Agreed on all but the "decent" part
Sorry, the Huckster is anything but decent. But you're right, he's not establishment enough for the Neoconservatives so they'll railroad him.

13. Decent guy? Well...
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 02:45 PM by janesez
He forced a mentally-disabled minor child rape victim to bear her own stepfather's baby, rather than waive the parental notification laws in Arkansas. He also gave clemency to a convicted rapist and released him from prison - the rapist went on to kill another woman.

He's also repeatedly misappropriated governmental funds for his own personal use.

He is not a decent guy. He is a stone religious zealot lunatic shithead. Period.

27. How bout Affable?
I think when people say decent, what they mean is affable.

They're not saying he's a saint, or that they agree with his positions. They're saying that when you meet him, or when he's chatting on a show, he seems like a nice guy. He'd shake your hand, and smile, and offer you a beer. He comes off, particularly if you don't know squat about him, like he's a nice normal friendly guy, who actually cares.

THAT is why he's dangerous. Because you're right. He's not a decent guy. He's a stone cold religious zealot lunatic shithead. Just an affable one.

I don't. But then again, I am not a pro-rapist, anti-science Jesus-rode-a-dinosaur vote like Huckster's base.

31. Obama would absolutely destroy Huckabee
Go over to freerepublic.com and see how much they hate him. Or look at his 11% support in New Hampshire. Huckabee excites the Jesus Freaks, but mostly just the Jesus Freaks. Independents wouldn't touch him no matter how funny he is.

Clinton would be running against Nader on the left, Bloomberg up the center, and Huckabee on the right. Hello President Huckabee!

28. I'd love to have a beer with him
I'd ask him alot of uncomfortable questions about his position, and either just make him uncomfortable, or cheese him for as long as it took him to finish his beer.

I just don't know where I'd start.

21. this is exactly what scares the hell out of me about the Huckster
he really does come off exactly as you described him. for the useless "undecided"/"independent" voters, this kind of superficial BS is important.

the bastard appears to be a nice guy. that appeals to many, many people. that's why Huckster scares me.

24. i don't think his policies matter one iota
it's the (distressingly many) people who would actually cast a vote based on "likeability" that couldn't care less about his right to life policies, or his foreign policies, or his Iraq policies, or his _____________ policies...

we forget that we're (DUers) are in the teensy tiny minority of people who care about the substance of political discourse. the majority of "likeability" voters will decide this election, and unless we can sucessfully tie the repuke candidate with chimpy and remind people that they really don't like shrub, we'll lose.

that's why i don't think it matters one bit who our nominee is (to the general public). as long as they can sucessfully define the repug candidate as chimpy, we win.

their churches publish voting guides, their preachers remind them that they cannot vote for anyone who tolerates abortion, they are a scary voting bloc since the GOP empowered them.....

26. I didn't like Bush no matter what he said back then
but Huckabee the guy portrayed on tv is very likeable and funny. I think Bush was more dumb and dumber type humor which I have never liked but Huckabee just plays like Andy of Mayberry...

The repubs don't want him to be their guy though because religious or not we could crush him just for the things he has said and done and they know that.

He is on colbert to try and get the youth vote...don't you want to be a fly on the wall and see what he really talks like at home??? Same with all the candidates...

We probably wouldn't vote for any of them...they probably talk about us like we do them...
