Blackwater Gassed US Soldiers
2005 Use of Gas by Blackwater Leaves Questions

WASHINGTON — The helicopter was hovering over a Baghdad checkpoint into the Green Zone, one typically crowded with cars, Iraqi civilians and United States military personnel.

Suddenly, on that May day in 2005, the copter dropped CS gas, a riot-control substance the American military in Iraq can use only under the strictest conditions and with the approval of top military commanders. An armored vehicle on the ground also released the gas, temporarily blinding drivers, passers-by and at least 10 American soldiers operating the checkpoint.

“This was decidedly uncool and very, very dangerous,” Capt. Kincy Clark of the Army, the senior officer at the scene, wrote later that day. “It’s not a good thing to cause soldiers who are standing guard against car bombs, snipers and suicide bombers to cover their faces, choke, cough and otherwise degrade our awareness.”

Both the helicopter and the vehicle involved in the incident at the Assassins’ Gate checkpoint were not from the United States military, but were part of a convoy operated by Blackwater Worldwide, the private security contractor that is under scrutiny for its role in a series of violent episodes in Iraq, including a September shooting in downtown Baghdad that left 17 Iraqis dead.

None of the American soldiers exposed to the chemical, which is similar to tear gas, required medical attention, and it is not clear if any Iraqis did. Still, the previously undisclosed incident has raised significant new questions about the role of private security contractors in Iraq, and whether they operate under the same rules of engagement and international treaty obligations that the American military observes.

7. mercs
If you add Iraq merc deaths to the tally, that makes 4,500 American Dead to date, as I think the death count for Iraq contractors is around 600 or so? US has more merc in Iraq than military - 160,000 mercs vs. 130,000 troops.

Nice work if you don't get maimed or killed!

I am using the term "mercs" casually, it might be more correct to lump them under "contractors", as not all hired help over there carries guns and kills people?

23. You are correct about mercs vs contractors.
Only a small percentage (10-15% ?) of the contractors are working armed security. The vast majority are doing maintenance, supply, and reconstruction.

15. Black Water Spokeperson said it was an accident.
A vehicle on the ground also dispersed gas. She lied. Those Mercs did it on
purpose for reasons that are yet to be determined. Black Water are RWing loons & goons that
do whatever they feel like doing because they are not bound by the usual laws of
engagement.

Will Congress do anything about these Mercs that are running rampant?

21. She said it was mistaken for a smoke canister...
Anne Tyrrell, a spokeswoman for Blackwater, said the CS gas had been released by mistake: "It seems a CS gas canister was mistaken for a smoke canister and released near an intersection and checkpoint."

She offered no explanation of why they'd need to use a smoke canister at a checkpoint being manned by our military.

Officer and NCO's who witnessed this all said it appeared that they did it so a Blackwater convoy could get a clear path.

I wonder what the candidates have to say about Blackwater? Will any of them advocate putting Blackwater under some kind of jurisdiction and making them accountable?

32. Because they had helicopter

She was probably assuming most of the audience knows that smoke canisters are how you tell helicopters where to land.

That's not really "gassing your own people" in the sense that's normally meant.
