What My 35 Years of Experience Have Taught Me
As I prepare to shift into a new demographic bracket soon - *sniff* - here are a few lessons I've learned during my first 35 years.

1. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one. For instance, the needs of the many suffering American families outweigh the needs of the few DLC oligarchs. Or the needs of a single overweening candidate's ego.

2. Be who you are, be authentic, and try to be better at it each day. For instance, don't change policy stances on a whim, like a new hair color you might just give a whirl, 'coz progressive policies are harder to grow back than natural roots.

3. Don't act out of expedience; act out of principle. For instance, don't hang out with those who say "triangulate" in anything other than a derisive tone.

4. Collect as much info as you can in the timeframe you have, then act in accordance with your principles. For instance, don't kick the can or move the goalposts on equality issues.

5. Share your toys, especially when you're not using them. For instance, if you have dormant data that could help someone else act in accordance with shared principles, let them play with it, too.

6. Learn how to give and receive a sincere apology (special thanks to my grandmother on this one). A sincere apology does not have the word "if" in it. It has the word "for," instead. For instance, one would not say, "I apologize if my Iraq War vote offended anyone." Rather, one would say, "I apologize for botching my Iraq War vote, for the horrendous consequences it helped bring about for our nation, for the heartache and separations it has caused our military families, for the turmoil it has caused for millions of displaced refugees, and for the deep damage it has done to our standing in the world."

7. Read your horoscope and fortune cookie slips for fun, and learn to distinguish cause and effect from correlations. For instance, if your chief pollster pulls out his Palantir, that's for giggles, not for realsies. "You will be beloved by hundreds of millions, and your lucky number is 360 Electoral Votes," should have you telling your pollster to lay off the Scorpion Bowls.

8. Sometimes, it's better to work at the tactical station, sometimes the captain's chair is where you belong; learn to tell the two situations apart. For instance, if you're a capable and effective Senator, but would hurt downticket races, endanger the next national reapportionment exercise, and endanger the midterm majorities in 2010, become an even more capable and effective Senator, and leave the Oval Office chair to someone better suited to the exigencies of the long-term political calendar.

9. Truly activist wizards always bounce back, and don't need marketing hype to label them as Comeback Kids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obi_Wan">Exhibit A. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandalf">Exhibit B. If your spellbook includes a Triangulation Incantation, you're more akin to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palpatine">Exhibit C and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saruman">Exhibit D.

10. It doesn't take 35 years to find your voice. It just doesn't. Really. It does not. No, really: it does not.

- Dave

P.S. Find someone who truly loves you for who you are, and love them back with your whole heart and soul.

4. I've Been Keeping a Journal...
... since I was 9. For my 9th birthday, I asked for a journal and a really good dictionary.

My first entry was about the release of the hostages and Reagan's swearing-in.

It's fun to go back and look at 15, 25, etc.

There are some common, hardwired themes that run through it all; but there's plenty of growth, too.

101. He has done both.
He limits himself to mostly the Northeast from Maine to Delaware hauling produce and frozen foods. He used to do mostly long haul when he drove for an employer. He loves being his own boss even though he works much harder now.

Right now my daughter is targeting the Harrisburg area. She has a second interview there for a job she really wants next week. She didn't make much headway in the Philly area. Her concentration is in Marketing but I think she'd kick butt in sales as well. She worked her butt off to pull a 4.0 GPA so hubby and I are pretty proud of her.

"He limits himself to mostly the Northeast from Maine to Delaware hauling produce and frozen foods. He used to do mostly long haul when he drove for an employer. He loves being his own boss even though he works much harder now."

My brother liked long hauling. That was his http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Road">Jack Kerouac Experience. We've talked about tag-teaming it once he finishes school, if our "others" will let us. Does he own his own rig, too?

"Right now my daughter is targeting the Harrisburg area. She has a second interview there for a job she really wants next week."

*everything crossed for her*

If she doesn't get it, PM me. I have some good contacts in Harrisburg.

"She didn't make much headway in the Philly area."

Did you want her living there?

"Her concentration is in Marketing but I think she'd kick butt in sales as well."

As is often the case, those skillsets are highly transferable.

"She worked her butt off to pull a 4.0 GPA so hubby and I are pretty proud of her."

108. Yes....
My son owns his rig as well as an extra refrigerated trailer. He always has an empty trailer at the cold storage facility to save himself time and extra miles. He loved long haul runs but the local runs are more cost-effective in his situation.

Thank you for crossing everything. I'll let you know how the interview turns out. No, I wasn't too wild about the Philly area but she has friends and family members in that area so that helped me with my peace of mind.

Thank you for kicking butt and taking names yourself. :toast:

2. Corollary: Tie it to a Wonder Twin or Aquaman instead. Sit back, enjoy.
3. Only when people are involved.
4. Wrong: Pissing off the right person ensures something gets done.
5. Right: Can't argue there.

Haven't seen any artwork out of you lately. What gives?

have a new job, with an hour commute each way so it makes for an 11 hour day..

also have 5 cats, 2 adult dogs and a 6-month old puppy to contend with when I get home...

just don't have the time to spend following politics, thinking of toon ideas and then drawing them up

haven't dragged my watercolors out in over a year either... no time...

need to add to the list of things learned:

The Santa Scenario:

I buy the presents, wrap the presents, drag in the tree, put up the tree, decorate the tree...and some fat guy in a red suit gets the credit

This vaca was long overdue. I was running on fumes.

"have a new job, with an hour commute each way so it makes for an 11 hour day.."

Whatcha doin'?

"also have 5 cats, 2 adult dogs and a 6-month old puppy to contend with when I get home..."

I have kept a plant alive a whole year almost; there is a friendly wager involved.

"just don't have the time to spend following politics, thinking of toon ideas and then drawing them up"

20-hour days help.

"haven't dragged my watercolors out in over a year either... no time..."

Would a houseboy help? I could get used to being domestic.

"I buy the presents, wrap the presents, drag in the tree, put up the tree, decorate the tree...and some fat guy in a red suit gets the credit"

Escaped that rat race a long time ago. The holidays were meant to be enjoyed.

94. a story regarding rule 4 - or how I got a new printer
-- when the right person gets pissed something will get done... or Pissing off the right person ensures something gets done..

about two years ago, my printer at work died. According to company procedures, I needed to find and price a printer, then submit a request for money. If the request was for less than $100, I could just get it from petty cash.

I found a printer, same brand/make/model as the one that died, and it was about $75 (with tax), and it was from a local store - which meant I could run out that day and get it. I submitted the request to the purchaser. He tells me he can't authorize squat for any computer equipment without approval from the IT department in St. Louis.

So I send off an e-mail to the IT department with all the info and request approval. 10 minutes later I receive a response "gee, that's too bad". PERIOD.

Now, I've a big problem - I can't print reports, brochures, manuals...nothing. At that particular point in time, I decide I have to invoke RULE #4 in some fashion. I consider the "on-strike" method - meaning I won't print out reports and tell whoever needed the reports that the reports would be delayed until I get a new printer. I reject this as a 'work-around' would be easy enough - just print the reports to a file and e-mail the file to someone else in the building and print it off at their station. Ditto for other material needing printing. pain-in-the-ass but it would work.

so how do I get a printer? Well, I heard the big-cheese was coming for one of his bi-yearly visits (this is the guy in charge of our company, he's based out of St. Louis and 'manages from afar' )

I go into his office - his printer is the same as my broken one. I swap printers, taking his working printer, and substituting my busted one.

two days later he shows up with his lackey. he tries to print something out, of course the printer doesn't work. As one of the more computer nerds around, he asks me to take a look at the printer. I sit down, and make a big production about checking settings, booting/rebooting the computer, opening up the printer, checking print heads, rollers, connections etc. After an hour or so, I turn to him and said

"Printer died. You could send it out for repair, if it's repairable it will probably cost more to fix it than buying a new printer. I was looking at printers for my home use and officemax has the same make/model for about $75."

he tells me to get money from petty cash and buy it.

Me: don't we need the ok from IT for computer equipment?

Him: screw IT - I need a printer.

a couple of hours later, he has a working printer and is happy. the next day he heads back to st. louis. I take his old printer and swap it for the new one.

74. But one can lose their voice for many reasons and then find it again.
Hillary has a long history of having found her voice. But a weary-worn, media-RW-Dem-bashed woman in her 50's can surely not be blamed for "losing her voice." And who are we, couched-TV-glazed-eyed folks to doubt this?

It's an program of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). I too have a thing for penguins and polar bears! And what is happening to their habitat is breaking my heart.

World Wildlife Fund, another fantastic organization, has a special Polar Bear program too: http://www.worldwildlife.org/polarbears/ as does Greenpeace: http://www.projectthinice.org/. It seems (at least to me) that NRDC is the most active politically.

I've decided to "rotate" my signature lines and feature each one for a while. Even if I get just one person to pay attention and support their efforts, it was a good idea!
