Southern Baptists urged to root out child molesters
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17265721/

/snip ...The Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests has started a campaign to call attention to alleged sex abuse committed by Southern Baptist ministers and concealed by churches.

Well who would have guessed that the might be a problem?? :sarcasm:

2. Actua;;y the stats bear out that there are very few pedophiles in protestant churches
Sure there is the occassion statutory rape story beween a youth pasors and a 16 year old femaale and the occasional b t for kiddie porn... but it is nothing close to what has happened hostoricallyh in the RCC. Biggest reason in the SBC is that nearly all SBC pastoral leadership is married.

Now if you want to tak about incidence of adultery that is a completgely different matter.

3. I'm sure the stats were low for the Catholic church as well.
Always is before things are brought out into the open.

6. How trustworthy are these "stats"?
Couldn't they be, you know, fudged a bit? It happens.

7. How about a youth pastor
and a seven year old female, as well as her two little sisters? Interesting...he lived in Chicago, and traveled from church to church. He was a ventriloquist. I remember that day. My parents took us to his house in Chicago for the weekend. I remember being led by the hand into the dark room for a special showing of his dummy in the trunk.

His last name is engraved in my mind and soul forever. Where do I sign up?

8. I certainly am not saying it does not happen. it does
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 07:49 AM by Perky
But if you measure it mby the number of lawsuits file or charges brought is is far less than with the RCC.

A suggestion that is is still largely hidden in Protestant churches needs to proven empirically. The fact that we have so many abused by priesr come forward whil protestant victims have not come forwarward in large numbers as well probably is indicative that the level of perdophilia is not as great in the protestant faith.

11. So, you're going by lawsuits? Oh brother
I love the anti-Catholic comments on DU. Which is what this is, folks. The Church's hierarchy may suck, but the men and women Religious who serve the Church's people are dedicated and decent people. A very few sociopaths don't change this.

10. Celibacy doesn't lead to pedophilia/molesting
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 08:07 AM by LostinVA
And, I'd like to see these stats, because everything I've read says there's a real pedophilia/sexual abuse problem in Fundamentalist Protestant churches. And, as another poster says blow: no one thought there was a problem in the RC until certain priests were exposed.

And, Excuse ME??? Statutory rape??? It isn't statutory rape if it's between a 16-year-old and an adult clergy member. That is RAPE. That is sexual assault of a minor.

Keep spinning.

14. So...I'm looking for these stats here on your post and they're not
showing up for me. I think you are speaking of that which we know about versus that which has yet to come to light... I don't think those would be very reliable "stats". You?

15. Oh boy!
Biggest reason in the SBC is that nearly all SBC pastoral leadership is married.

And stats show us that most pedophiles are married!

16. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics, some wag once said. Read up on Jospeh Combs if you
don't think there are some freaky things going on out there. And yes, he was married, and his wife was apparently complicit in it as well.

18. But there's a big problem with sexual abuse in the mormon church, too
And their leaders are married.

The problem isn't celibacy- it's an atmosphere where the laity can't question those in authority.

19. Maybe
But the stats bear out that there's a zero percent divorce rate among Catholic priests.

4. Got nows for y'all.. Pedophiles are EVERYWHERE.. in all walks of life
they can be your dads, uncles, step-dads, brothers, teachers, scout leaders, doctors, lawyers, preachers, bosses.. You name it.

In fact the most "successful" ones are the "pillars of society" types.

The scruffy-looking guy at the playgrouns, is usually busted pretty quickly, but the clean-cut "nice guy" in the neighborhood, usually gets away with it for years and years..and some are never "caught"..

17. But, please, keep all the bigotry, misogyny, and backward thinking we've grown to love.
Wouldn't want to ruin the Southern Baptist name for anybody.
