Great LTTE In WaPo On Libby Trial !!!
The Libby Trial Is Serious Business
Wednesday, February 21, 2007; Page A14

Shame on The Post for publishing Victoria Toensing's irrelevant opinings <"Trial in Error," Outlook, Feb. 18> as the case against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby goes to the jury.

My issue is not legal. My issue is the extreme damage that occurs when CIA identities are bandied about by political hacks and the newspapers that cheer them on.

These leaks violate the code of blood honor of the CIA, MI-6, Mossad and every clandestine officer. Real people die. Real heroes are exposed and murdered. Real intelligence is lost. Real sources lose trust in our honor and refuse to cooperate. Real wars are fought mistakenly. Real troops are endangered. Real damage is done to U.S. credibility throughout the world.

War is not a dinner party for ideologues. Espionage is not a 007 movie. The lives of covert operatives are not petty cash to be bartered for spin.

If Mr. Libby is acquitted, God bless him. If he is convicted, President Bush should immediately renounce a pardon. Our heroes deserve a standing ovation, not a stab in the back.

BRENT BUDOWSKY

Washington

1. I'm surprised they printed it...
but maybe they just did it to cover their ass for the firestorm Toensings rant caused.

2. Am I stupid or what
All these right wing ranters and ravers yelling about Libby not being the first to leak the name, that Wilson leaked the name, that Valerie leaked her own name. Well correct me if I am wrong somebody but isn't Libby being tried for lying - Perjury - (and obstruction of justice cause he lied). So what does being the first the second or the leventy twelth to leak the name.

9. my repug Wash. insider friend told me "everyone" knew her identity and "she wasn't covert"
when I asked him how he knows this, he was speechless. I told him I'd read a lot on this subject and she worked on counterproliferation to uncover the WMD trade---not exactly sweeping floors.

12. Right. So this entire trial, everyting Patrick Fitzgerald is doing, the Grand Juries, the
testimonies and investigations, Judith Miller going to jail — all of this because a 'desk jockey' got her name in the papers. Riiiiight....... Oh, the Righties are a strange bunch, I tell ya. Anything, ANYTHING so long as Republic party leaders bear no blame for anything.

5. Martha served time for "Lying"
No one was convicted of inside trading, so it is not clear to me that she lied. On the other hand, Scooter was trying to cover up an act that can get people killed. It's his word against 7 or 8 other people. I hope he gets more time than Martha did.
I also hope that someone will be tried and convicted for outing Mrs. Wilson.

It also bothers me that the supporters of this administration love to call us who oppose this "executive branch run wild" as traitors.

10. Great letter.
It is interesting to note that Media Matters had just released the findins of a study that looked at Washington Post editorials and guest op-eds since October 28, 2005 -- when Scooter was indicted. The study focused on those essays that mentioned Scooter Libby, Valerie Plame, and/or Mr. Fitzgerald.

What they found were: {a} four essays "condemning the indictment and prosecution or suggesting the trial is unfair"; {b} ten essays that mentioned the case, but took no position on it; and {c} zero essays that contained anything that was supportive of Mr. Fitzgerald or the prosecution.
