EITHER GIVE US SINGLE PAYER UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE or STOP TALKING ABOUT CHANGE & HOPE!!
France is healthcare leader, US comes dead last: study

WASHINGTON (AFP) — France is tops, and the United States dead last, in providing timely and effective healthcare to its citizens, according to a survey Tuesday of preventable deaths in 19 industrialized countries.

The study by the Commonwealth Fund and published in the January/February issue of the journal Health Affairs measured developed countries' effectiveness at providing timely and effective healthcare.

The study, entitled "Measuring the Health of Nations: Updating an Earlier Analysis," was written by researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It looked at death rates in subjects younger than 75 that could have been prevented by timely and effective medical care.

The researchers found that while most countries surveyed saw preventable deaths decline by an average of 16 percent, the United States saw only a four percent dip.

The non-profit Commonwealth Fund, which financed the study, expressed alarm at the findings. "It is startling to see the US falling even farther behind on this crucial indicator of health system performance," said Commonwealth Fund Senior Vice President Cathy Schoen, who noted that "other countries are reducing these preventable deaths more rapidly, yet spending far less."

1. Yeah . . . this "change" BS is really getting annoying --- !!!
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 11:33 PM by defendandprotect
Not like we weren't fighting for single-payer health care even in '92 . . .!!!

What was the name of the Dem who they attacked . . . he ran a big battle for Senate for national health care/single payer --- and they got him out in one term ---

And then Hillary gave us nothing ---

Bill did float at one point trying to get every up to age 57 into Medicare ---
that was left to shrivel up in the sun ---

2. ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY!
Shit, even just dental care. How many people are dying early cause of heart disease and blood poisoning from bad teeth.
How many are in pain? How can ANYONE afford to take care of their teeth? And that's just the teeth. And that's just for yourself! How about your whole family! Shit!

4. EXACTLY!!! I'm sick of BS pols talking about butterflys and rainbows
and feeding us shit and keeping us in the dark once elected.

I don't buy any political speeches except Kucinich, who has always spoken truth to power and stood up to the criminal bullies every damn time.

Barrack will do nothing about health care and collect a check for it. And the MSM will not question him.

24. yesterday I was reading about the head of some HMO in Rhode Island
Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 10:28 PM by truedelphi
He has not allowed a Rhode Island hospital any payment increases for procedures in years and years.

And he has made over a half billion dollars in like six years!

Some years he makes more on his paycheck than the entire 2200 employees at the hospital!

What is this crap about.

Supporting Dennis is a good thing. Why we aren't marching in the streets and tearing apart the corporate offices of these insurance hacks/executives I don't know.

5. Of course we need change Mr and Mrs candidate. Duh!
We need more than change. We need a 'one eighty' degree re-direction. We need the laws to be upheld and the criminals in the White House thrown into jail. Health care is a human right. Not something to be doled out by elitist corporations. The Constitution needs to be restored. The Patriot Act needs to be repealed. Homeland Security is a farce. There is NO WAR ON TERROR. Terror is a tactic that will be with mankind as long as we exist. The people of this country are not all sheeple that believe anything someone in a suit says. :dem:

13. 30% of insurance premiums go to administrative costs
and that is not counting the profit.

Imagine the improvements that could be made by re-directing that amount of money into preventive health services.

Hillary has worked for years to change health care--look where that's brought, us...
Bear in mind, We did BELIEVE there would be CHANGE in 2006!

We've already had eight long years, to HOPE, for change!
We can hope for change all we want, but sometimes, HOPE, is not enough!

16. Insurance for health care has failed!
I remember when a Dr. came to the house to treat me and, my folks probably paid cash. That's how old I am. Now that I need more help there is less available to me and it is increasingly complicated. Medicare would be great if it were'nt for the additional insurance one must buy/purchase lay out cash. Firat Medicare is paid for and then one pays for drugs or another insurance company to obtain drugs and on and on. If this is help and hope then I don't want to see what will be available for my children.

23. Damn right...
Poor, uneducated, dummied-down Americans excel at the suspension of critical thinking required to believe in the most illogical premise of all: that the US has the best medical care system in the world and has achieved that position because the most voracious, profit-hungry, inhuman corporate institutions routinely ignore their very reason for existence, which is pursuing profitability with single-minded, sociopathic disregard for basic human values. This is nothing less than a case study in the impossible, but it's the core tenet of the great American health care fairy tale nonetheless.

So are these corporations portrayed in media and pop culture as the enemy, as you would expect? Of course not; they're the solution. The US, unique in the world in its child-like belief in corporate good citizenship, expects these rapacious profit machines to completely abandon their chartered mandates requiring them to churn out ever more money for their stake-holders and, instead, act in the best interests of their customers.

Only Kucinich had the intellectual honesty to call them out for what they are: legalized murder incorporated. But he can't win because he looks like a gnome and his wife's the tall one in the family and he's got that mid-western accent and he's not real big on religion and blah, blah, blah...

So you get what you get, and once again you pull your nose half out of joint trying to kill the stench of your vote for another GOP-lite corporate suck-up.

I swear to christ, if Americans aren't the most gullible, stupidest, most self-destructive bunch of slack-jawed imbeciles on the planet, I'd hate to see who is.

25. I am so with you
I don't want to hear about hope and change from two folks who seem, to me, to be more about selling themselves than talking substantively about the issue of HEALTH CARE. We have to quit putting it on the back burner, it is the 'red-hot stove' issue.
