Another Gulf of Tonkin Incident?
OK, let's assume that Bush's assertion that the Iranians are the only people in the whole world that want to get nukes just so they can start a world war and kill hundreds of millions of people is absurd on its face. Iranians are like anyone else and just want to live in peace.

Let's further assume that Bush is looking for a reason to start a new illegal war but, this time, against Iran.

With these two assumptions, the obviously-fabricated incident with Iranian boats and US ships looks an awful lot like the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. In case you don't remember, a US naval ship was supposedly attacked by North Vietnamese boats in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964. It was used by the President (then Johnson) to justify an extreme escalation of the Vietnamese War and has, since, been shown to be a fabrication.

Looks like Deja vu all over again.

Does anybody here honestly believe that this Iranian incident was not fabricated?

1. my first thought on hearing it yesterday was "gulf of tonkin" and nothing I have seen
or heard has changed my mind.

boygeorge is whining about the "aggression" of the iranians. let's see--WHO has been threatening them for lo these many moons with nukes, etc? gee, one could not imagine why they might not want to do a little aggressing of their own.

2. I'm sure a lot of folks do.
One of them isn't me, however.

I don't believe one damn thing the US (or Canadian) government has said for the last 20 years without a reality check.

3. The audio...
of the Iranians "threatening" the ship was a poor attempt to make it sound like accented English.

Just my take, but it sounded goofy.

4. I dont know what to believe anymore...
First of all, I think Bush and Ahmadinejad are like two peas in the same pod. They are both playing cowboy, and disregarding the rest of us, in both countries.

I think it is likely that this happened, against the wishes of the majority of the Iranian population.

6. Gods
Where are our politicians standing up to this? Where is congress? Where are our presidential candidates on this?

Someone should be making a speech tearing into the Bushies for this.

Almost 44 years ago a terrible policy mistake was made based on a myth. It was a policy mistake that resulted in one of the longest wars in American history and left our nation torn apart. The echoes of that mistake have resonated through the generation and helped increase disturst in our system of government both within our nation and without.

We heard that echo again after the current administration chose to invade Iraq using fabricated intelligence. They used lies about Aluminum tubes, chemical and biological weapons, and yellow cake uranium.

We cannot afford to have the administration sabre rattling around while it looks for any rationalization it can find to create another war. We cannot accept a president or presidential candidate that is willing to lie or accept lies designed to foment a war. And we can no longer abide by a president who willfully accepts or creates lies regarding Iranian nuclear capacity while simutaneously declaring Iran to be the greatest threat to World Peace.

7. wtf?????????????
"the obviously-fabricated incident with Iranian boats and US ships looks an awful lot like the Gulf of Tonkin"
What the hell is your basis for this stupid statement, do you really think this kinds of bullshit does not happen every damn week over there? The IRG does not answer to anyone but the Ayatollah and sometimes they dont even listen to him. "obiously fabricated" is not the word, standard issue is.

"of the Iranians "threatening" the ship was a poor attempt to make it sound like accented English."
No it sounds exactly like alot of the Iranians, Quataris and Iraqis you talk to over there.

"Does anybody here honestly believe that this Iranian incident was not fabricated?"
