Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman apologizes to Tiger Woods for 'lynch' comment
Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman has apologized after saying during Friday's telecast of the PGA Tour's opening event that today's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

In a statement issued Monday, Tilghman said: "On Friday during our golf broadcast, Nick Faldo and I were discussing Tiger's dominance in the golf world and I used some poorly chosen words. I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments."

The story was first reported by New York Newsday.

The Golf Channel also responded to the situation. "We regret the unfortunate choice of words Kelly used during the broadcast and apologize to anyone who was offended by her remarks," the network said in its statement.

"We take this matter very seriously. She has apologized privately to Tiger and publicly on the air."

Tilghman, who played college golf at Duke, is the network's main play-by-play announcer during PGA Tour telecasts.

A Golf Channel spokesman said no disciplinary action is planned. Attempts to reach Woods were unsuccessful.

3. Maybe she meant "lynched beneath the hangin' tree" instead?
You can see how she'd confuse the two.

4. "I also apologize to our viewers who MAY HAVE BEEN offended by my comments"
I hate that phrase with a passion. It's a complete non-apology. If a viewer wasn't offended (maybe David Duke was watching), then there is no need for her to apologize???

Also, they were not just "poorly chosen words." A black man should be lynched represents just "poorly chosen words?" I don't think so.

This is a complete farce and no apology at all. She should be fired.

6. Bingo. Zero tolerance.
I am so sick of racist jackasses that get away scott free just because they "apologize" and mention the old, tired line about "unfortunate choice of words."

They should be fired immediately.

12. Yep--it says "My comments weren't really offensive, just SOME people are too delicate."
Fuck her and the horse she rode in on.

My apologies to anyone BESIDES Ms. Tilghman who may have been offended by that comment.

We're an avid golf family, even my kids love to hit the ball around. This disgusts me.

7. He's beautiful Maddezmom
There have been quite a few racial comments in the golf world where Tiger's concerned. He walked into a predominately white man's world and a white man's game and kicked ass. After Tiger won his first Master's, the tradition is a very ornate table is set somewhere on the Augusta course and the winner, his family & friends are served the dinner of their choice. Fuzzy Zoeller referred to Tiger Woods as "that little boy" and urged him not to order fried chicken or collard greens for the Champions Dinner next year.

11. Yep - and Tiger took a beating from a lot of these wingnut
types after the whole Fuzzy Zoeller thing because apparently he didn't reach out to poor, persecuted Fuzzy quickly enough!!! :banghead:

There are a number of "fans" that jump all over Tiger no matter what he does, and you'd have to be a fool to think that at least some of that bitterness wasn't racially based, given the incredibly exclusionary history of the sport and the mindset of at least a few those who grew up immersed in that exclusionary attitude.

15. I've never seen the Golf Channel
I guess I'm too busy watching similarly exciting cable offerings like the Chess Channel, the Lawnmowing Channel, and the Watching Paint Dry Channel.
