On your disdain for poor southern, white, rednecks ....
YOU ARE WRONG!!!

I'm sick of my poor people being disparaged by the rest of the country and victimized by the true racists who establised a separate system of education during integration. We are poor, we are white, and we could not send our poor childrend to racist, whites-only, private schools during integration. We integrated with poor black folk during the 60's, and 70's. Sometimes peaceful; sometimes not. But in the South, there arose a private school class of white children who knew they didn't have to attend school with niggers. That was for us farmers' children -- poor white trash -- as you called us. Rednecks who were teammates, classmates, and friends with our black classmates. We couldn't afford the racism of the middle class, so we adapted and learned. Yet, the private, privileged education afforded them racism, privilege, and a political philosophy that always started with, "Why do I have to pay ...?" These are the people you give a pass, because they are better educated and maybe "sound" less racist -- they are not. I LIVED on the black side of the tracks because my mother was single and poor. My neighbors were wonderful black families who had less than we did. I was a total nerd at school, but I could join in the black side of the playground no questions asked. And I went to church and scouts with some of those private school whites whose parents had every excuse for sending them to the academy. Let me tell you, whatever their parents' excuses, their children knew better -- they didn't have to attend school with niggers!! They actually said so.

Though I hated them, I still felt inferior. Goddamnit. They had no right. My second best friend was black. We were both nerds. Public school or private school, when you make stellar grades -- you just don't have that many friends in a rural community. My best friend was the cootiest of the cootie boys. Even the cootie girl would beat up my best friend -- the cootie boy. But Burly was the third nerdiest kid in school, but the nerdiest black. He had a really tough time.

What you people don't understand is that after integration, poor whites were left behind with black southerners. While it wasn't called such, there was a 'seperate, but equal' education system set up where middle and upper class whites could send their children to 'private' academies which meant -- 'no blacks'. So during the 60's and 70's, while us rednecks were learning how we were now on the same rung as our black friends and neighbors, -- the really racist among us were feeling special and privileged to attend all-white 'private' schools.

So there you have it. Racist whites in a parallel education system are admired by you for being educated Southerners. Poor blacks are met with sympathy and empathy for living in a racist environment. But us poor white Southern rednecks, are punished by you for having to attend the same dysfunctional public school system as Southern black folk -- while better educated, much more racist, middle and upper class Southern whites are admired by you people.

Screw you all. You don't know crap. Cozy on up to the racist white genteel who have you mesmerized -- they are the Bushes, the Ken Lays, and all the remnants of the Plantation owners. The rednecks you hate are not the racists and were just as much victimized by the negligence of public education as are our African American neighbors. You wouldn't dare attack uneducated Southern blacks, while you gleefully savage uneducated Southern whites -- products of the same public education -- and cozy up to racist, educated, separated, cultured Southern whites -- whose moneyed grandparents prefered to establish a whites-only private education system rather than allow their heirs to attend school with niggers -- yes, that's how it was. That's how it is.

Those kids at church and scouts who attended Woodward Academny, First Presbyterian Dayschool, or Hampton Roads Academy -- I hated them. Yesterday's racist spoiled brats; today's young Republicans. They weren't rednecks. They weren't poor. And those of us who were -- in their eyes, we were just as well niggers -- same attitude as all of you DU folk.

I've had it with poor Southern whites being pitted against poor Southern blacks. The real power in this region doesn't care about any of us and we have nothing to gain allowing them to make us enemies of each other. And I've had it with outsiders jumping on a belligerent, antagonistic, bandwagon of superiority. Here's a hint --- YOU'RE NOT HELPING ANYTHING!!! Some of the most urgent priorities among us liberals are most needed in the South -- you all want to antagonize and alienate those who should be our most ardent allies. Just who do you you think you are???

Sorry for the rant, but yet again, I've read a New Englander's account of what a white, Southern, redneck is like. I want to tell you, if you grew up knowing those charming Southern genteel folk attending your Ivy League universities -- you'd hate them as much as I do. Come down and spend some time with us before you think you've got us all figured out.

32. Read Albion's seed, the southern working class Scots Irish culture is our enemy
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 11:06 PM by billbuckhead
as a philosophy, not necessarily as individuals. Listen to Greenday's anthem against the "redneck" agenda, "American Idiot". But, Kulturwar and genes aren't the same thing. If Zell Miller grew up in San Francisco or Cleveland and went to Carnegie Mellon or Berkley, he sure would have been a different person. Historically this group has been among the most violent and anti-intellectual people in the world. From Braveheart to the "Trail of Tears" to the Civil war to opposing the civil rights movement. They were shock troops for the British Empire to this day and the bedrock of the long over romanticized frontiersman in America and also the bedrock of American armies from Washington's to Lee's to George W Bush's. The Quakers and the Puritans eventually thought they were worse neighbors than the Native Americans. It was inevitable there would be a civil war and maybe another civil war is brewing. Liberals are intellectually the descendent's of the Quaker-German-Benjamin Franklin culture in Pennsylvania and this Scots Irish group has long been the enemy. This "redneck" crowd embraces fundamentalism, nationalism and weapons with great gusto. Wherever they live in the world, the violent crime rates are high and the military is top notch. The UN recently said Scotland was the most violent advanced area in the industrialized world (except in murder since they can't get guns as easy as Americans). This reality creates a lot of tension and cries of bigotry on this board but until these "rednecks" scream "uncle" on their political beliefs(not just George W Bush), the future of our planet is jeopardized by this working class reichwing crowd. No working class group has ever supported fascism in America like today's "rednecks" and it's long past time to call them on it. Rove has played these people like a fiddle and it's time for them to play a new tune. Maybe the Dixie Chicks or Steve Earle or Eminem. The siren sound of Scots-Irish cultural power is music and the roar of car racing.

As a disclaimer. I'm genetically a 1/4 Scots Irish, half Pennsylvania German and a 1/4 Swedish. This war has divided my family's living room for my whole life.

2. My experience...
after living in New England, the mid atlantic and the south, is the south is the most integrated out of the 3, and the further north you get, the more segregated the society is in terms of white/black.

4. Mine is similar
The south and the military are much more integrated and less racist that other regions and organizations. Few believe it unless they have been there.

15. I found that in Boston, also, when even in the late 60s, the
entrenched racism hit me in the face like a brick. I'm not sure it was any worse than "educated" southern racism, but it sure was a different flavor of it. It was a little more mixed when I left, but not much.

You're absolutely right about the role of class there, and everywhere else.

I'm convinced one of the roots of racism is rooted in class snobbery. Blacks, no matter how educated and successful they are, are clicked in to "poor, ignorant" slots by racist whites. It's infuriating and bigots never catch on.

Conservatives have done a great job of criminalizing poverty by blaming people for being born poor and having opportunities closed to them. You bet poor whites are suffering along with blacks. The problem is that some poor whites are bigots just so there is one group left they can feel superior to.

3. The class elitism on this forum is really amazing, I agree
I remember when I posted that I drove an Escort. All the "progressives" assured me that they wouldn't be caught dead in such a thing. That was the first time it was aimed at me, but I wasn't surprised, having seen it so many times aimed at others--poor whites, rural people, southerners, religious folks.

It's all disgusting, but at a practical level, it costs us elections, too.

16. Good points, poorly made
I had to force myself to read your post to the end. Almost gave up several times.

I won't deconstruct your post. Suffice it to say you've made as many over generalizations and mis-characterizations of others as you yourself claim to be a victim of.

In a forum as large as DU, with membership numbering in the scores of thousands, it is arrogant to claim you have taken a full measure of all of us, and can boil it down to a single post.

You have painted with far too broad a brush, and splattered yourself in the process.

I have seen the posts that offended you, and do not condone them either. The proper response, if you feel offended by these posts, is to hit the alert button to send a message to the moderators explaining why you feel a given post is offensive.

I will assume this post was made under extreme provocation, and lack of familiarity with DU protocols.

I look forward to reading future posts that depart from the pattern herein established.

And welcome to DU.

I don't think the OP spoke out of turn. Too many people on this board fall into stereotyping white Southerners, including some of the Southerners.

36. I saw a thing on the History Channel about the KKK
at one time all, or very nearly all (can't recall with precision) of the Indiana Legislature belonged to the KKK. It was practically a requirement to get elected. Then there was a sex scandal involving the governor and the state grand wizard or dragon or whatever, and that put an end to that. I'll look it up.

17. Good post. And a question.
I am not flame-baiting here. I am not trying to have yet another board war over the same old, same old, same old thing. I just want to ask a genuine question. Why is this discussed so often on this board? I have been on this board for a number of years and it seems to be constantly fought battle about the south. I belong to a number of boards and no one seems hung up on trying to punish and vilify the south like here. Why is this battle still being fought? Red states are not just in the south. Again, I am just curious why this is such a hot topic on this board.

23. Good question.
When one considers that every state is purple and when one considers that the "reddest" of the so-called "red" states are in the mid-West (the Plains states, to be exact), I wonder if people actually pay attention to the voting patterns or if they're simply following Hollywood-generalizations of Southerners.
