Gravel To Teens: Marijuana Safer Than Alcohol
EXETER, N.H. -- Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel told a group of high school students on Sunday that marijuana is safer than alcohol.

Speaking to a group of students at Phillips Exeter Academy, he said that he believes people should be able to buy marijuana in package stores.

"Alcohol is a heck of a lot worse than marijuana, and I'm sure a lot of you have tripped out on alcohol," Gravel said. "It's a lot safer to do it on marijuana."

Gravel has called for the decriminalization of minor drug offenses and better treatment for abuses of hard drugs.

A spokeswoman for Phillips Exeter said that candidates are free to express their opinions.

4. I LOVE Mike Gravel! He's totally right on!
This whole country would be in far better shape if more people were getting stoned.

Yes, I'm serious.

25. You're right.
Weed is criminalized mostly because those in power fear the effect it would have on society. Master/slave relationships and hierachical dynamics would be harder to maintain. It sounds like crazy talk, but I'm completely serious, too.

8. I may have to rethink my choices.
At the very least, this is a great way for Gravel to make the press pay some attention to him. He ought to keep saying outrageous things. Especially when, as here, the statement is true.

26. Yes, by light-years
I love Mike and I hope he gets as much attention as possible. Actually telling the truth for the sake of telling the truth (rather than as a calculated political ploy) - it's nothing short of revolutionary.

There's only one Mike Gravel. He's old and he just doesn't care. He's going to tell the truth and to hell with everything. It's great.

24. He's right.
I don't smoke weed, but I used to drink quite a bit. I've seen a lot people who do both. And the people who are stoned almost never cause any trouble, while the drunks are legendary for stupid behavior.

Alcohol is much more dangerous in any number of ways.

35. "and I'm sure a lot of you have tripped out on alcohol"
tripped out? on alcohol?

isn't that enough to make any teen pee their pants with laughter and never hear the best part - where a presidential candidate tells them they should smoke pot?

Most kids probably just think it's cute, and that might actually encourage them to listen.
