On Sunday afternoon, Donna Jordan approached Democrat John Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, at an event here and asked why she should vote for Edwards rather than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.
Jordan, 51, has breast cancer, and the medicine that costs her $110 a month in the United States can be had for $15 a month in Canada, not far from this northern New Hampshire town.
Elizabeth Edwards, who also has breast cancer, explained her husband's health proposals and told her that Clinton "has accepted campaign money from the drug companies," Jordan said in an interview. "That was the key."
Jordan pinned an Edwards campaign button to her lapel, and trekked to the Berlin fire station 12 hours later — at 3 a.m. Monday — to see John and Elizabeth Edwards when they greeted about 40 supporters as part of an all-night bus tour of the state.
When Elizabeth Edwards told the gathering about converting an undecided voter from the area, Jordan surprised her by calling out, "here I am."
