There has not been a Democratic landslide since 1964--I don't count 1992 and 1996 since Bill Clinton didn't clear 50% and never polled over 400 electoral votes.

Republicans have had a stubborn base of support in this country since 1980.

and the candidates are pandering to... bush supporters - the dwindling base. They have lost many moderate republicans who are now independents, and many swing voters (independents) are disgusted. I think that party affiliation has been reported as 36 % identify GOP to 50 % identify democratic. The numbers have not been that lopsided against republicans in decades.
