6. The effects of smoking may have not yet shown up yet

I am guessing Japanese cigarette consumption rose as a result of the destruction of traditional Japanese culture and the McCarthrization of the Home Islands in the aftermath of WWII.

Their greatest generation may have smoked less than the subsequent ones.

maybe that has something to do with it, along with their traditional diet.

*whose* dollars? The private individual, or ... ? Those extra two years seem to be awfully expensive no matter how you look at it.

and odds are they were awful anyway.
