'It's a Small World' Disney Artist Dies
'It's a Small World' Disney Artist Dies

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Joyce Carlson, a Disney artist who helped create the idyllic universe of singing children at "It's a Small World" rides across the globe, died at home at the age of 84.

Carlson died on Wednesday after long suffering from cancer, The Walt Disney Co. said on Friday.

In a 56-year career with Disney, Carlson went from delivering paints and brushes to animators to inking films herself, but it was her work on "It's a Small World" that is witnessed by millions of visitors each year.

Carlson was among the creators of a miniature prototype of "It's a Small World" for the 1964 World's Fair in New York and subsequently helped bring the attraction to each of its permanent locations: Florida, California, Toyko, Paris and Hong Kong.

1. I'm sorry for her passing but I must admit
nothing at Disneyland made me want to puke more than "It's a Small World".

3. I thought it was interesting that it started at the World's Fair.
And Disney liked it so he put it in his park. There was a similar origin for the dinosaur diarama on the train circuit.

7. Ha! Try riding that damn thing 8 times in a row!
We took our then 3 year old son to DisneyWorld and went on "Small World", along with some friends whose son was also three at the time. Our son is disabled so we had to use the wheelchair entrance, and the cast members assigned us to a handicapped accessible boat for the ride. And once the ride ended, they then asked the three year olds if they'd like to go through again. Well, the little guys were thrilled to go again, so they just kept circulating our boat through. This happened seven times in a row!

Luckily for my sanity, another family with a disabled party showed up so we were able to finally get the heck out of there! The kids were soooo happy, but I am convinced the cast members did that just to see how much the adults would take of Small World before we went insane!!

Funnily enough, my son's favorite moving figures were the girls dancing the can-can... Of course this is the same kid whose favorite entertainment on TV was Victoria's Secret ads.:eyes:

8. Last time we went on that ride,
one of the animated Hula girls had gone haywire and was gyrating like she was having a seizure. They had better do some maintenance on that place.
