Question: If we're supposedly losing the racist vote by nominating a Black man
does it really matter?

Somehow I doubt the racists would turn out for Hillary or Edwards either...

5. It's a matter of degree.
A Democratic Racist is more likely to vote for Edwards or Clinton than for Obama. Given the size of the electorate, even a tiny degree could affect the election.

6. Well, not all racists are white. But, I don't think white racists...
will vote for ANY Democrat. So, I agree with you.

I recently read something ('Sorry, didn't bookmark it) that claimed that there are Latinos that won't vote for an African-American. I can't imagine that would be a significant number, though.

7. People who won't vote for Obama because he's black
probably wouldn't vote Democratic anyway. That's not to say there are absolutely no racist Democrats, but I'm pretty sure the Republicans can claim the vast majority of them.

and not take race/gender/sexual orientation into consideration.

So, hey, if you're all about Obama's policy proposals and ideas ... go for it - vote Obama.

But, if you're backing him, while NOT agreeing with his policy proposals and ideas, just to prove how you're not a bigot/racist (as I've read on these boards) .. you're just making race (or any other 'box' they might chose to put folks in) MORE of an issue/litmus test.

10. I don't think it's about losing their votes
it's about making sure they all show up to vote against Obama.

Personally.. I'm not so sure it's a major issue.

11. we're in a different time now.
the majority of caucus voters were young. The old folks message is dying out--so is their vote.

13. I kind of doubt that racism was the old (Iowa Democratic...
Caucus)folks' message.

Really, kids, get over yourselves.

12. You need every voter in your party who votes to vote every time.
So, if some Democrats stay home because they don't like whatever it is, it's a loss to the party. A candidate needs to address the negatives against him. So, whether the negative is race, gender or profession, it's up to the candidate to deal with voters who might not vote for him or her because of the negative.

14. I've been saying this for a while
If someone is that much of a knuckle-dragger, they probably aren't voting for a Democrat in any case.

Think Walter Payton.

19. Pfft...I don't buy it. I think if Condi or Powell ran, repubs would vote for them.
I think that a black man can win...and if he can't, then maybe you don't deserve him.
