Officer Fired, 4 Disciplined After Pregnant Woman Tasered
POSTED: 2:13 pm EST December 29, 2007
UPDATED: 9:04 pm EST December 29, 2007

TROTWOOD, Ohio -- A probationary police officer who shocked a pregnant woman with a stun gun has been fired, and four others have been disciplined following a departmental investigation, the safety director in this Dayton suburb said Friday.

Officer Michael Wilmer, who joined the police department in December 2006, had already been terminated for unrelated reasons, which included driving city-owned vehicles at excessive speeds and posting unauthorized pictures on his MySpace.com account, said Safety Director Michael Etter.

The investigative report prepared by Trotwood Police Maj. Quincy Pope said Wilmer was justified in using a Taser stun gun to subdue the woman but committed an error in judgment and violated department policy by administering the device to the woman's neck, an area reserved for the most violent subjects.

Wilmer also failed to summon medical help or ensure that photographs were taken and documented inaccurate information, all in violation of policy, the report said.

Sgt. Richard Wright was suspended for one day for failing to see that photographs were taken of the woman's neck and to ensure that she received medical evaluation.

Jeebus, we really ARE turning into a police state, when it seems that you can't get "out of line" in any way, shape, or form without taking the risk of getting tased these days.

5. Ya, they'd already fired him...
And he hadn't even been on the job for a year, in this case they handled it well. Lets face it, when it comes to cops, the local PD has to police their own. In this case they did.

7. True he didn't, but she had just walked into the police station
I mean.. she was in the Police Station, she had kids with her.. how hard could have it been to detain her without zapping her? And the findings? Force was reasonable.. so they fired the guy..

10. what justification did they have to detain her much less use
force to do so? Was she arrested and charged with a crime? If not the cop committed aggravated assault and was let off the hook in the usual white wash of police misconduct. "to protect and serve", what a fucking joke.

9. This is why some of us gun nuts won't count on the police
to protect us. They will happy to fill out a report after you have been robbed, assaulted, raped or murdered, but don't expect the cops to protect you, your rights or your property.

A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

I am a member of both the ACLU and the NRA. The NRA, for all of their Neanderthal politics, protects my right to protect myself and the ACLU protects all my other rights.
