Huckabee says good intentions more important than facts.
At least, that's how I interpret this. (Saw it on an AM show as I was waking up, finally found it online.)

MIKE HUCKABEE: There are more Pakistanis who illegally cross the border than of any other nationality, except for those immediately south of our border.

COWAN: Turns out, those numbers aren't quite right. According to the Department of Homeland Security, there were hundreds of Pakistanis who crossed into the US illegally, but they are hardly near the top of the list. In fact, they don't even rank in the top 25.

HOLT: I think some would argue that it was not your finest hour, your comments regarding Pakistan. You said that we should monitor our borders for illegal Pakistani immigrants and you said that Pakistanis make up the second largest group of illegal immigrants in the country. Do you kind of wish you had a do-over on those comments?

HUCKABEE: Well I was quoting from a Denver Post article and pointed out that there were 660 Pakistanis who had been apprehended by Homeland Security. And the point that I was making is still valid, and the fact is that the numbers are over a longer period of time than I had originally thought, but my point is that we don't have control of our borders. And if people go back to a speech that I made in September, it looks almost prophetic when I was spending a lot of time on Pakistan, talking about the danger that exists there. People scoffed at that, they said our issue is Iran, I said you better look at Pakistan. If we have another terrorist attack, it'll be post-marked Pakistan.

HUCKABEE: What they're looking for is authenticity; they're looking for is honesty. I didn't say "apologies." I said "we need to offer apol-- I mean," then I said. And it was like the reporters pounced on it. Lester, you and I both make mistakes when we make comments. What I don't make a mistake is a mistake of the heart. I know what I believe. I have convictions. People are looking for a president who isn't perfect, but who has at least a sense of direction in his own life and has clear and unmistakable ideas about what's right and what's wrong.

Yeah, Huck, that's what worries me...

More:
Oh dear. I only found this two places, Newsbusters and below...
http://www.proudtobecanadian.ca/index/resources/news/
which I now see lists itself as: " PTBC is a conservative politics web site featuring conservative thought. With bite."
If you want to read the whole interview there rather than Newsbusters, you'll need to search for "Holt To Huck: Wish You Had a 'Do-over' on Pakistan Comments?" as the link takes you to Newsbusters.

They have the video also:
http://www.proudtobecanadian.ca/static/2007/12/2007-12-29NBCTSHuckabee.wmv

Obviously, I have a different spin on it than they do!

Tried the NBC site, but they don't seem to have it up yet.

1. The reasoning of a compulsive liar.
A really practiced liar does believe the lie at the time it is spoken. They think that is the same as honesty.

2. I'm baffled by his emphasis on the assertion that our next terrorist would be
from Pakistan, as if it matters what SPECIFIC NATIONALITY the terrorist is, considering that all the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia or Egypt, and yet, we invaded Iraq. How 'bout that Shoe-Bomber guy, wasn't he from England? How 'bout Timothy McVeigh, wasn't he from the good ol' USA? Terror can originate from any country, anywhere. This is an example of the dangerously narrow, shallow thinking Huckabee has--he actually thinks he can stop terrorism by focusing on one specific factor over all others, depending on what's in the news. Fucking scary that this guy was even a Governor--I'm not sure his IQ is triple digits, frankly.

3. Now for something completely different.......
I am becoming concerned and irrationally, just a little offended. I have answered to the nickname "Huck" for 52 years and rarely, aside from Mark Twain's work and Nick Cave's, have I seen my handle used in print. I didn't realize how much I liked that situation, because since the improvement in Mike Huckabee's fortunes I see "Huck" frequently here on DU and NEVER in a positive context. I hope he goes away soon!

7. You are right, and I apologize to you and Huck Finn.
Please tell me about Nick Cave - if you like him and Twain, I figure he's probably someone I should read.

14. re: Nick Cave
Nick Cave along with his group The Bad Seeds wrote/performed a song "Saint Huck" (As I type this, it occurs to me that perhaps Huckabee would be pleased by that title and use it as a campaign song!)Of course, lyrics available on web many places.
