***DUzy Awards for week ending December 28, 2007***

Welcome to the DUzy Awards, honoring assiduous antics, ablutionary argy-bargy and articulate ad-libs from this week on DU. Congratulations to this week's winners!

The dazed and confused DUzies will be announced every Friday, if I get around to it. Previous awards can be found in my journal.

Note to Mods: Skinner has authorized the DUzy Awards to be posted in GD.

Special thanks to Tuesday Afternoon, troubleinwinter, hootinholler, bleever, Peake, rocknation, scarletwoman, 48percenter, Heidi, CaliforniaPeggy, The Magistrate, eridani, unhappycamper, LeftishBrit, Viva_La_Revolution, SeattleGirl, Kurovski, DS1, Lars39, dicksteele and NanceGreggs for their invaluable assistance.

For anyone who missed the links to a year of the DUzy Awards, you'll find them here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x2528683

Happy New Year, DU! Now let's go beat those bastards.

"Fusion Energy Ends Oil Use: Middle East Walled Off"
Rolla, MO: It was ten years ago that scientists at the University of Missouri - Rolla discovered safe, clean, fusion energy could be made in small enough packages to operate automobiles, motorcycles, and the newly-improved two-passenger "trike" cars imported from Great Britain.

"Being able to make clean, safe and plentiful energy from human waste was once considered disgusting," said Dr. Philo Benderdender. "But it's become the greatest benefit to the human race since the invention of the bidet."

Because the byproduct of the fusion reaction is lubricant to assure the free running of any machinery, there is no longer a need to import oil. With this plan, U.S. President Miley Cyrus has implemented Operation Pink Tupperware, which effectively seals off the entire Middle East from the rest of the planet. The entire subcontinent is a no-fly zone, immigration from the area requires a stringent one-year process and is limited to 500 people a year. Anyone entering the area is warned that they will have lost their citizenship in their native land and will have to apply for re-entry like any other immigrant.

"It pains me to say that they have not yet learned that outright killing of anyone who doesn't like a particular belief or creed is not a way to live in the 21st Century," President Cyrus said. "But all attempts to teach this lesson have failed."

General Harvey Fierstein will be in charge of the cordon, and has placed ninety percent of NATO's heavy armor and troops around the borders. "It's actually light duty," Fierstein confirmed. "The greatest threat our troops face is loss of income in poker games."

U.N. Secretary General Masi Oka has praised this decision, as well as Russia's agreement to enforce the same restriction on its borders. "At last, the greatest threat to world peace - the battle for petroleum - has been rendered moot. Now, with the unlimited energy coming to the Rolla Reactor, we can apply our energies to improving life on Earth for the poor and frightened - and to the exploration of our solar system and perhaps worlds beyond. It would be wonderful if the people of the Middle East could share in our bountiful future...but hell, they pissed off the rest of us a long time ago. OPEC, my ass."

Police: Man opens gift early; wife stabs him
"A woman stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife following an argument that began when she accused him of opening a Christmas present early, authorities said Friday.

Misty Johnson, 34, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery, a felony, and misdemeanor domestic battery. Her husband, Shawn Fay Johnson, 34, was treated at a hospital for a wound to the chest, police said...

As the argument escalated, Misty Johnson accused her husband of having an affair, authorities said. Police found a marriage license in the couple's apartment stating they were married in late September..."

DU "Dr. Seuss answers Huckabee" thread.
As related in this thread by cali, Huck tells a little girl that his favorite is Dr. Seuss:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3878559&mesg_id=3878559

How do you think Dr. Seuss might respond? I'll start:

I do not like this Huckabee;
Not sitting by a Christmas tree,
Not even with a floating cross,
I do not want him for our boss.

I do not like him with Chuck Norris,
In fact I may need my thesaurus
And search from letters A to Z
For words to make it clear to see:

I do not like this Huckabee!

response #3 by wicasa:

response #10 by Patsy Stone:

      Alright, here goes:
Mike Huckabee,
When will you see
That we don't trust you;
No, siree.

Oh sure, you might like
All things Seuss-ian,
But you don't believe
In evolution?

Huckabee, Huckabee,
I can't perceive,
Why we should choose you
if you don't believe.

response #11 by sfexpat2000:

I do not like this Huckabee
for president or nominee
I do not like him at the pulpit
on the stump or debating Mitt.

I do not like him on the dais,
spouting Christo fascist bias.
I don't know how the GOP
Can like this Perot wannabee.

I do not like this Huckabee!

response #20 by shugah:

      Huckabee Hears From WHO???!!???!!
On the third day oh-eight, in an Iowa school,
At the height of the fight, he was Chuck Norris cool,
He was polling…enjoying some unexpected joy…
When Huck’bee the elephant heard a small noise.

So Huck’bee stopped praying. He listened to the sound.
It was God’s voice though Huck’bee heard it when no one was around
Then he heard it again! A very clear command.
The creator of the universe was lending a hand.
“I want you,” said God, “To be President”
Huck looked and he smiled. He knew he was God’s Gent.
But a small speck of science blew past though the air.

“I say!” murmured Huck’bee. “I’ve never heard tell
Of some science or theory that is able to quell
What I think!…Become the Prez, indeed I must
Lest the USA be small speck of dust!
Some sort of a country of very small size,
too small to be seen by God’s Holy eyes…

A poor little Baptist shaking with fear
That he’ll blow his one chance! His path is so clear!
The fundies will save him. Because, after all,
We have to convert them, that is our call.

So, gently, and using the greatest of care,
Huck elephant stretched his huge cross through the air,
And he lifted a Bible and carried it over
And placed it down, safe, and then opened the cover.

“Humpf!” humpfed our Huck. Twas a page from Matthew.
And something about turning the other cheek too.
That verse he explained, applied only to women
Submit to your husband, that’s a Bible given.

“Believe me,” said Huck’bee. “I tell you sincerely,
My ears are quite keen and I heard him quite clearly.
I know God wants me President. And, what’s more,
Quite likely next term. Even three. Even four.
Quite likely…

Forever, for all that we know!

It’s true! Yes, how true, said our great candidate.
When I’m Prez, do you know what I’m planning to do?…
From now on, I’m going to convert them with you!
And the fundies in his pocket said…
“…ME, TOO!”
“From flat earth in the textbook to dinosaur barbecue,
I’m going to convert them. No matter what GODAMMIT! (oops! But really, what does rhyme with barbecue? ;-) )

response #25 by Yuugal:

      Sneetches Rock!
"Then, of course from then on, you can probably guess,
things really got into a horrible mess.

All the rest of the day on those wild screaming beaches,
the Fix-it-up-Chappie was fixing up Sneetches.
Off again, on again, in again, out again,
through the machine and back round about again,
still paying money, still running through,
changing their stars every minute or two,
until neither the Plain- nor the Star-bellies knew
whether this one was that one or that one was this one
or which one was what one or what one was who!

Then, when every last cent of their money was spent,
the Fix-It-Up-Chappie packed up and he went.
And he laughed as he drove in his car up the beach,
"They never will learn; no, you can't teach a Sneetch!"

But McBean was quite wrong, I'm quite happy to say,
the Sneetches got quite a bit smarter that day.
That day, they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches,
and no kind of Sneetch is the BEST on the beaches.
That day, all the Sneetches forgot about stars,
Voted Edwards into office and rocketed Bush off to Mars. "

There's only one way to settle this
Everyone get their butts up here to northern New York where there's plenty of snow on the ground. In the spirit of unity, we'll build a 300 foot high snowman of George Bush on the shore of the St Lawrence River and paint him in red striped prison garb, big and bright enough so people from clear across the river into Canada can see our big frozen dummy president.

If that doesn't work to unite us, then we'll have no other recourse but to split up into DU candidate supporter groups and pummel the living bejeezus out of each other in a major DU snowball fight until the last group is left standing!

Have you heard of the Holy Highway I-35
"If you turn to the Bible -- Isaiah Chapter 35, Verse 8 -- you will see a passage that in part says, 'A highway shall be there, and a road, and it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.'

Churchgoers in six states have held prayer sessions along the side of Interstate 35.

Now, is it possible that this 'highway' mentioned in Chapter 35 is actually Interstate 35 that runs through six U.S. states, from southern Texas to northern Minnesota? Some Christians have faith that is indeed the case..."

      Well, that convinces me!
After all, how could it possibly be a coincidence? The Book of Isaiah was written in chapters and verses, and the interstate highway numbering system is clearly the work of God almighty as well. Totally not coincidental at all.

OP by Jackpine Radical:

      A Republican's Christmas Prayer
Dear Lord,
Far be it from me to tell You how to run things in Your universe, but I've noticed a few things that maybe You will want to attend to when you get the time.

First, there's my neighbor Tom down the road. I think he's a homosexual or something, what with that long hair and earring of his, and he's got one of those peace signs nailed up on his garage. I notice he's driving a nice new little furrin car, and you know Lord that just don't seem right. I'm hoping you'll see your way clear to send him a pestilence or something just to put him in his place.

And another thing, Lord. My boss said he doesn't believe in You. I wanted to make sure you know that, just in case it slipped Your mind what with all the things You have to think about.

And Lord, I don't know if you get out shopping much, but some of the stores have big Happy Holidays signs instead of wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

My Aunt Mabel said bad things about President Bush the other day. She said he's an idiot and he tells lies. Well maybe you would want to think about smiting her, Lord.

Billy Johnson down the street came back from Iraq and now he don't seem right in the head. Well, Lord, as far as I'm concerned that boy never was right in the head, and he never did go to church much. I told his mother that Billy was one of those phony soldiers who were saying bad things about the war, otherwise you would have protected him from that roadside bomb. I told her it was only fair that the Army won't pay for Billy's doctors because I shouldn't have to pay taxes to take care of somebody like that.

And Lord, I sure been trying my best to do Your work down here. I been talking up that Huckabee fellow to everybody, and I been telling everyone I sent him a hundred dollars in order to be a good example. I even been thinking about actually sending hims some money for real, but you know how hard things is for me down here like I told you the last time we had one of these little talks.

I don't mean to complain, Lord, but that million dollars we talked about ain't got here yet, and neither did the new Cadillac, so I think some of the people down at church don't understand how much you love me. Like I say, I don't mean to complain or nothing, and I knw you're awful busy smiting infidels and such, but I wonder if you couldn't maybe move me up a notch or two on your To-Do list.

I guess that's about it for now, Lord.

Amen.

'Twas the night before something, when all thru DU
Not a post-whore was Lounging, no flame wars did brew.

Dear Peggy was snockered, on a bit too much ‘nog
Rabrrrrrr was a-ranting, whilst elves he did flog.

Midlo was napping, O.D’d on pot pie
But Lara’s still shopping, for boots to her thigh.

DS1 up to mischief, Matcom dishing crap,
Had decked out their manbox, With sparkly gift wrap.

When out in GD there arose such a fuss,
I put down my brewski and let out a cuss

Oh what could it be?! Was it smoking indoors?
Pitbulls now shopping at Walmart stores?

The flames from the thread were giving off heat
Through the monitor’s screen, and up to ten feet!

And what was the subject, the meltdown DU jour?
A Rovie? A troll? A clueless DU-er?

It was Warren Christmas, and his life partner Don.
They’d found Gay Apparel and were putting it on.

They’d pimped up a sleigh with rhinestones aglitter,
And leading it all, - wee flying spaghetti critter!

It was Warren Christmas, things just won’t be the same
Warren whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

Bolognese! Puttanesca! Carbonara! Alfredo!
On Linguine! Arrabiata! Yo Tortellini and Sun Dried Tomato!

Now Duers be true to our Warren Christmas,
Remember the Atheists, the Hindi, the Listless…

The Buddhists, the Druids, the Zoroastrian
The Arabs, the Inuit, the Indo-European!

Think about Chanukah, Kwaanza, you bet!
And our Asian neighbours who celebrate Tet!

Now hoist up a beverage, go cuddle yer pup
Go snuggle a kitteh or find someone to schtupp,
But remember the words on Warren’s best cup:
“Holidays should be spent all liquored up!”

Merry Christmas everyone!

So anyways, I stopped by Walmart to buy some sex thread when a tiger jumped out of a Hummer
So, I ran into a nearby Olive Garden and saw a couple of cops eating salad. I told them about the tiger and at first, they didn't believe me. But once they heard a roar and some screams they ran out with tasers drawn.

Laura Brannigan was playing over the restaurant's speakers as I looked out of the window and saw the cops chase the tiger down the street

Since I was hungry, I sat down and ordered a soup and salad with a Schlitz malt liquor. On the tv I could see a live broadcast on Fox News showing the tiger being chased. They interrupted Bill O'Riely by the way.

I could see on the tv, the tiger running into a nearby Applebee's with the cops close behind like a couple of pitbulls. Of course, all the patrons ran out and I'm sure that all of them didn't bother to pay their tabs before they left.

Someone turned the channel during commercial and we saw Nancy Grace, with her flaming nostrils of justice give us the lowdown on the situation.

Before we knew it, the cops came out of the restaurant. Turns out that the tiger has succumbed to repeated tasing.

That was explained to everybody by the police department's spokesman, Warren Christmas.

Say Hillary wins Iowa and Obama wins NH
What then?

response #4 by Uben:

It means Hillary wins, here's why.....
Iowa is only one word and New Hampshire is two words, so since Hillary won a one word state, and Obama a two word state, it stands to reason that Hillary would win this scenario because there are more one word states than two word states.

Now, you could always go by alphabetical order, but she wins that one too, because I comes before N.

Some folks might argue that since New Hampshire has more letters, it is the bigger prize, but they both have only three vowels.
Granted, New Hampshire has more consonants, but the only one Iowa has is the letter W, which we all know represents a win.

Simple logic....really!

Fox News was on the tube when I went in for a Dr.'s appointment.
I was already in a bad mood. This was a new doctor's office for me, and I didn't know what to expect. I was the only one in the office as this was early morning. Right away, I saw that their big plasma screen in the state-of-the-art waiting room was tuned to Fox "News." Low-brow propaganda was flooding the room.

Usually when I see Fox News somewhere, it isn't only me in the room. But this time I was by myself, and there were no dimwits around to soak up the "dumb rays." I was taking a full dose.

So I introduced myself as a new patient and asked the receptionist if she could please switch the TV to a "news channel." She laughed a little nervously and handed me a couple of forms to read. I scanned her for telltale signs of in-breeding. Normal, I thought, although I hadn't seen her fingernails.

I sat down to read the forms, but the Fox News "content" continued. When I returned the forms I said, "Seriously, can we change the channel? I find this channel deeply insulting to my intelligence."

She seemed surprised, but to my disappointment, un-offended. She said (roughly), "OK, I understand. But if you could just have a seat, you'll be in to see the doctor in about a minute anyway."

I wavered and started to head back to my seat, but had to stop. "You know," I said, "Let's just cancel the appointment." But as I said it, I noticed that she had already grabbed the remote and started to change the channel--which she did.

I thanked her and went in for the appointment. I was conscious the whole time, so I'm pretty sure they didn't do anything to me. Fox News was still off when I left.

* He's got a great "universal" health care plan. It doesn't provide universal coverage, but it mandates that EVERYBODY has to buy their own health insurance--

* He's got a "secret plan" to end the unpopular war in Asia. He won't just pull our troops out, because "we broke it, we fix it", right? He'll not only prolong the occupation for at least another five years,

but also bomb Iraq's antagonistic neighbor (Cambodia, Iran, I forget what it's called). More troops to fight a losing battle, that's what we need!

* Nixon has a tremendous welfare reform plan that makes welfare queens take any job-- that's right, ANY JOB-- that's available, even if it pays sub-poverty wages-- just like the great Clinton "welfare

reform" plan of 1996. Nixon's Family Assistance Plan is an idea whose time

has come!

Not only that, unlike the other candidates, he's already won TWO presidential elections! He's a politician who knows how to win-- because winning isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing!

Duzy's and we ALL read ALL of them for mention of our name! Trust me, said the politician!

everyone misses the Duzy's if they are a day late. I love reading all the very witty people we have here and you are the person who puts it all together for us.

Clinton, Obama and Edwards should pay you for your service!

73. Blisters? Oh, dear.
Socks are the larval stage -- I learned that right here on DU. (it is to my great shame that I can't at the moment remember which amazingly wise DU woman explained this recently)

Anyway, it is the scientific explanation of why we lose socks, yet clothes hangers seem to multiply. The technical term is metamorphosis.

And, yes, one can always use more closets -- yet, paradoxically, one could also wish for fewer closets.

;)

28. In order to achieve that goal, you will have to either:
1) Outlive him by a decade or more, or
2) Find out some really good dirt and blackmail the bejeezus out of him.

If #1 happens, there'll be little pleasure taken from it, since you'll be competing for DUzys against a dead man.
If #2 happens, there'll be little pleasure taken from it, since you'll be despised and shunned by other, more moral citizens of DU who will, somehow, know what you've done.

Either way, it's all over for you, sw.
Stop even trying!
And stop winning all those DUzys, so some other people who might have won more in the past than they are currently winning on a weekly basis can once again harbor
the secret ambition of piling up so many DUzy wins that they will eventually surpass the kunning Mr. K!!!! :hi: :scared: :nuke:

Fame is an unfaithful mistress. All you who long for it know not what you ask...

53. Nice of you. Selfless, even. One might go so far as to say you want to shame me
into resigning my DU membership prematurely. Very nice. Pretend-to-be-sympathetic-while-pulling-the-rug-of-hope-out-from-under-the-newbie
kind of nice. Less competition for little old scarley-warley, ya know?

Well, I wasn't born yesterday, babe! I ain't no dummy, and I'm not about to give up on the dream of de-throning Kurovski by winning more
DUzys than he, just because you claim it can't/won't ever happen. Yeah, right - you want me to pull up my funny tent, get all introspective and silent-like,
while you go on regaling the general public ad infinitum.

Well, Kurovski can't go on being wittier-than-thou forever, ya know. Some day, he's gonna get hemorrhoids. Some day, he's gonna get a cold and wake up feeling
achey all over; even his teeth and gums will hurt. I mean, the guy isn't invincible, right? And - not that I'm wishing anything bad on him, or anything like that - but
when that dark day dawns, you and I will be here and will RUSH immediately in, to fill the momentary humor-void. And therein and thereby, we shall make
our names known.

Unless, of course, we have hemorrhoids of our own, or a cold.

41. I was going to spreadsheet and graph the winners, until I realized
that would be obsessive-compulsive behavior of the most extreme order. Universal rule: as soon as something is put into a spreadsheet, it becomes soul-destroying.

But if somebody wants to count, I'd be mildly curious to see the numbers, and to see if DUzy winners start slagging each other about it like the rabid candidate-shilling wolverines in GDP do.

Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 04:11 AM by Kurovski
given to us by Sugar Smack. (Post #133, from helderheid's "K&R" thread) There's a lesson for all of us here, and most especially for the next President of the United States, Hillary Clinton:

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologize...

...to a girl I may have been mean to in 6th grade. She will probably never read it.

Here goes:

Sorry Joey.

Remember that 6th Grade production of "Annie"? You were Annie. I'd tried out to be Annie, or an orphan, or even one of the Hoovervilles. Instead, I wound up being "Mrs. Greer", one of your maids. Do you remember being insufferable, doing breathing exercises and making everybody wait? How you stamped your foot and shouted, "I'M the star, here!", delaying my getting home to a bag of Cheez Doodles and the after school special, "The Wave"?

I guess we were a little immature, but I was the one who led the conspiracy (along with "Annette", "Drake", and "Mrs. Pugh") to pinch you really hard when you sang "Could someone pinch me please?" Opening night for the parents. It was during the number, "I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here", I'm sure you'll remember.

I also had the idea to poke your eyes out so you'd more accurately resemble the cartoon character, but that never came to fruition.

You probably didn't deserve it, so I am saying "I'm sorry" all these years later. You probably won't read this either, because I'll bet my life savings you voted for Bush."
