Are you feeling overwhelmed? Jaded? Hopeless? Join the crowd,
apparently.
Does anyone else find it ironic--and oh-so-predictable--that
the more our frail and puerile human egos struggle to avoid
responsibility for our species' rampant hedonism, the more the
vast majority of us profess to believe in God? Not just any
God, mind you, but a patriarchal Father God who will whip us
into shape come Hell or high water? Did you go to church on
Tuesday?!
Those who are working so hard to manifest a belief in
God--bumper stickers abound, mega churches are
proliferating--tend to be just as vociferous in compelling
'non-believers' to come on board. Herein one of the bigger
ironies: listen to the language of persuasion, rife with
insults and hatred. Such a glowing recommendation to embrace
the ideology of those who Fear. Are you ready to be saved?
And, despite the War on Christmas, more than half as many more
homes in my neighborhood displayed Christmas yard art (more
dollars pouring into China's coffers...) than in the past two
years. Oh, yes, True Believers--hie thee on down to the local
Wally World and spend copious amounts of money to prove your
allegiance to God and our Great Nation! Concurrently, I saw
fewer Salvation Army bell ringers this year. What?! We've
solved the dilemma of our burgeoning poverty class?!?
When, pray tell, did growing wealth become a Christian
mandate? In a world where vital resources are increasingly
challenged by our rampant overpopulation, growing wealth
inevitably means stomping on more than a few 'little people.'
How do 'Christians' justify this hubris? How is Joel Osteen
sleeping at night in his spacious, well-appointed home when
there are thousands of children just south of him going to bed
hungry almost every night? Not everyone can publish a best
seller...
Speaking of which--let's just go ahead and dismantle public
education! Why bother to stanch that gaping wound in our
nation's psyche? The elite can certainly afford to uber
educate their young and insure they will get all the plum
positions in our major corporations--you know, the positions
with the golden parachutes worth millions of dollars? Gotta
keep that money in the family, you know...
Oh, and thanks, Oprah, for applauding the advocacy of a few
Americans who are working hard to help the needy! You, who
are so vastly wealthy my mind cannot grasp it, making sure
that we feel all warm and fuzzy about hard-working Americans
helping those less fortunate--such a delicious irony.
Merry Christmas, all of you. I pray God will grant me respite
from my cynicism...
