Why does the human race have to manifest so much evil? This woman was lovely & good.

7. The Hour-Glass

“The Hour-Glass is an emblem of human life; behold! how swiftly the sands run, and how rapidly our lives are drawing to a close. We cannot, without astonishment, behold the little particles which are contained in this machine, how they pass away almost imperceptibly, and yet to our surprise, in the short space of an hour, they are all exhausted. Thus wastes man! today, he puts forth the tender leaves of hope; tomorrow, blossoms and bears his blushing honors which upon him; the next day comes a frost, which nips the shoot, and when he thinks his greatness is still aspiring, he falls, like autumn leaves, to enrich our mother earth.

10. chilling response
My wife and I were at the bank today, and we went over to talk to one of the bankers. She's Pakastani, and I mentioned to her that Pakistan had been in the news all day. In fact, CNN or some such was running in the bank lobby.

The Pakastani lady didn't seem upset at all. In fact, she seemed quite indifferent. She said something like "She's where she belongs." I also remember that she said that Benazir Bhutto was "a bad lady."

I thought to myself: "Well, I didn't expect THAT. I guess I asked for it."

To be honest, if George Bush or Dick Cheney were assassinated, I wouldn't be grief stricken, but I think I would be saddened by a violent death.

I admit that I don't know that much about Benazir Bhutto, but I believe that she was genuinely trying to restore real representative democracy to her country. I also believe that she was well aware of the risk she was running. Her father was prime minister and he was killed. Now, she has followed her father as prime minister and as political martyr. It is a sad legacy for Pakistan.

11. Many Pakistanis don't like Bhutto
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 08:48 PM by theredpen
It seems tawdry on the day of this terrible murder to discuss this, but the fact is that Benazir Bhutto was a terrible, corrupt politician. The Pakistanis I work with aren't that thrilled with Musharref's military rule, but they consider him a patriot who "saved" their country from Bhutto.

When Bhutto was ousted, the national treasury was empty — looted in its entirety by Bhutto and her corrupt cronies.

Yes, if George Bush or Dick Cheney were assassinated, many of us would be saddened by the criminal act, but many would be openly glad to be rid of them.

I don't really know what Bhutto really planned for Pakistan... her presence there was part of some grand scheme by the Bush Administration. Probably part of Bush's last-minute-legacy efforts. I guess that didn't work out too well.

13. What I'd like to say about this
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 09:17 PM by goodgd_yall
We need to be aware of where these charges of corruption come from. Was it Pakistani government officials who opposed her party? And who controls the media there? Has there been independent, objective investigations into these charges? I'm not trying to be an apologist, but I think these are valid questions to ask instead of believing the charge of corruption just because it's been repeated over and over.

People in Pakistan have different interests and different political views. You are bound to hear people who are apathetic or even glad Bhutto is gone.
