Censorship, and speech codes, and intolerance, oh my!
As you watch the holiday classics, pay attention to the certificate number granted to the films you love, granted under
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Production_Code">the Hays Code, or "Production Code," as it was more commonly known.
Some of the quainter forms of censorship (by today's standards) can be found in the certificates on display at the MPAA, and the Library of Congress.
Unfortunately, we still see these sorts of speech codes enforced in some quarters.
One person's "thought-provoking" writing or other work of art is labeled "flame bait" - and just as the Hays Code was often enforced by those who never made a commercially-successful or critically-acclaimed work of art themselves, so too do same said modern speech codes often have petty-minded enforcers at the helm (e.g., just look at the FCC).
Thankfully, we see so very little of that here at DU.
