Toby Keith, family win wrongful death suit
PURCELL, Okla. - Toby Keith, his mother and his siblings have been awarded $2.8 million in damages in the 2001 collision that killed the country music star's father.

A jury returned the verdict against Elias Rodriguez and Pedro Rodriguez, operators of Rodriguez Transportes of Tulsa, and the Republic Western Insurance Co.

According to evidence presented at trial, a charter bus owned by the Rodriguezes was "in urgent need" of brake repairs before H.K. Covel was killed in the March 2001 accident on Interstate 35, said attorney Greg Dixon, who represented Keith's family. The Rodriguezes had been advised of the brake problem before Covel's truck crossed the center median and struck the bus, he said.

1. Isn't Toby Keith a Republican?
I thought they hated frivolous lawsuits like this.

2. Only when they are not the beneficiaries
When they stand to get money, it is full steam ahead on frivolous lawsuits.

12. No I didn't forget. He explained it on some interview.
I don't recall the details, but he said he supported military action in Afghanistan

but not Iraq. He didn't want to get into the Dixie Chick dust-up.

but he admitted he had a stubborn streak.

I'm sure there are interviews about it on-line

24. Well, he donated $2000 to Bush in September 2003 and $2000 to RNC last Jan.
So when he says he "didn't support" the war on Iraq, what in the world could he mean? He's given at least $4000 to the creeps who started it, and AFTER the Iraq invasion.

Oh, and his donations are 100% to repukes.

29. He didn't want to get into the Dixie Chicks dust-up?
The obnoxiously gung-ho country singer Toby Keith (who, in the wake of 9/11, scored a country number one with an offensive record called Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American), which threatened "we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way", launched his own anti-Chicks crusade. His shows now feature a backdrop depicting Maines and Saddam Hussein as lovers. Another image has her face superimposed on the body of a toad.

BULLSHIT. Toby Keith is an asshole and so are the people who support him and his shitty music.

15. He's a "Dem" like Zell MIller and Joe Lieberman are "Dems"
Or more specifically, like a lot of southern rednecks who are still "registered" Democrats, but haven't actually voted for one since the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

And what's a "Democrat" doing hanging out with Republican assholes like Ted Nugent and Sammy Hagar?

I have Republican friends. People I have commonalities with outside of politics. So I don't find your argument very convincing.

13. read the whole story-" It later learned another vehicle had bumped the (Covel's) truck"
The family initially suspected Covel suffered a medical condition that caused the truck to veer out of control. It later learned another vehicle had bumped the truck and filed a wrongful death lawsuit to clear Covel's name, Dixon said.

The verdict was returned last week. "The jury found no fault on the part of Mr. Covel in the wreck that claimed his life," Dixon said.

5. If the truck had bad brakes, if they knew it prior to the accident, if the driver
crossed into the oncoming lane than this is a righteous lawsuit no matter who filed it.

Sorry but that's the way it is. Republican, democrat, martian, whoever.

28. Yes, I was aware of that...
IMHO, that would make both Keith's dad, and the bus driver, and owners
no more than innocent victims.

20. You got it all confused.
The driver who crossed into the oncoming lane was Keith' father.
And then Keith got awarded millions.

22. The truck crossed the lane because of being bumped by another vehicle.
That doesn't fault Keith's father.

25. You didn't, I apologize
I scrolled through a bunch of posts that seemed critical of Keith's father for "causing" the accident and Keith's family for filing a lawsuit. In my haste to reply to the overall sentiments of the thread, I projected those sentiments onto your post based on the subject heading.

6. Wait...I'm trying to understand the basis for this judgment -
it sounds like Keith's father lost control of his truck (for undetermined reasons) and crossed the center line, where he was hit by the bus and killed. The legal judgment then went against the owners of the bus??? This makes no sense at all...

8. Well DUHHHH.. Brown people killed a white man!
Didn't you *know* that white folk can lose control of their vehicles anywhere and any time they feel like it.. but *you* better be able to control *your* vehicle so you don't hit *them*?? :sarcasm:

This is just mind boggling....

27. Kinda like James Baker and family suing the makers of the pool drain company....
.....that was responsible for his granddaughters death. And to top it off, they lobbied to pass *GASP* "nanny state" legislation. Funny how big government intervention, nanny state product legislation laws and evil trial lawyers are OK when it's THEIR ox that was gored.
