Poll question: Who's your favorite progressive talk show host?
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 11:16 AM by marmar
I like many of them, there's no one I absolutely don't like, but I think Thom Hartmann is the best, just edging out Raging Mike Malloy. Who's your fave?

Aside from Big 'wind sock' Eddy, all of the others listed are good.

22. His whole anti AAR (and other "typical liberals") tirade last week was evidence.
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 11:41 AM by Mika
Of course, calling Randi Rhodes a slut (a while back) over a ratings "dispute" was simply disgusting.

Nuthin but a weather report over at Big Ed's show.

about 5 minutes and was happy when he was no longer available on AAR but like a very bad growth, he is back. I tried to listen a little longer yesterday but it was impossible.

33. Well, Randi and some others do come off as stereotypical "typical liberals"
I am sick of their politically correct, inability to meet conservatives on their own terms, and not to mention their general disdain for us left-libertarians.

I much prefer Ed Schultz.

I'm also amused by how many Randi fans and "politically correct DUers" are also big cable news junkies, but ignore Pacifica and ignore public affairs shows in general (like McLaughlin and Al Franken.)

As both Schultz and Franken pointed out, such shows are not "strident enough" for them, which is one of the reasons why public radio is withering in this country,

52. I used to think he was staking out some decent ground in the middle
Even tho I usually prefer them hard left, I was hoping he had a valuable niche as far as transitioning people off of the fascist bullshit that pollutes so much of the public airwaves. AFAIK, he was/is pulling numbers that indicate a fairly broad appeal, and I figured some of his listeners might be dittoheads who'd think they'd tuned into Rush and accidentally get educated, even just a wee bit. But it sounds like "Big Ed" is letting his show degenerate into a senseless ratings game of Jones vs. AAR and that's not going to help anyone at all.

Too many choices, to fine a granularity of plurality.

Too few choices, not authentic.

Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 11:26 AM by Patiod
Whenever anyone says "well, the Dems don't have a plan to end the war" I say

1) Yes, they do.

and

2) Okay, so you lend your $65K sportscar to your friend, and he lets his pet monkey drive it. The monkey crashes into a bunch of cars parked on the street, and ends up going through the window of a fancy shop, wrecking your car, and causing $2million in damages. Your friend then looks at you and says "so what are your plans for dealing with this mess?"

Bernie Ward's regular program is M-F 10pm - 1am (PST), and I strongly recommend you tune in to his very special Sunday morning program "God Talk" 6am-9am (PST). Brother Bernie is at his finest when he takes on the White-Wing Wacko Fundies. My entire family has been members of his "Church of the Holy Donut" for well over twenty years.

We all are outraged and angry until smoke comes out of our ears about the administration and the republican party. All the progressive talk shows can talk about how bad the administration is and republican politicians are today, but that still only leaves smoke coming out of our ears. With Stephanie's show, we still have smoke coming out of our ears, but we have a smile on our faces and know without a doubt we indeed are the sane ones. She also seems quite quick on her feet (also thanks to Jim and Chris).

Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 12:56 PM by La Coliniere
I get fired up by Malloy, Randi, Mike and Bobby, yeah I can even dig Lionel, but it's Thom Hartman who offers the most lucid, intelligent and meaningful analysis of "what's going on". Al Franken made me chuckle and I'm glad he's running for office, but Hartman is 100 times more thorough in his understanding of current events, which he views through a historical lens that Franken never possessed. Stephanie Miller's show drives me nuts with all the break away bells and whistles nonsense. Big Ed is simply too much of a boastful bore to keep my attention. I listened to Ed yesterday for about 5 minutes. He sees Iran as a huge threat and appeared to be picking up the drumsticks; he seemed really uninformed.

32. Problem I have with Hartmann
is that while he sounds like he knows what he's talking about, half the time he doesn't. He's good on The Founders but kind of shaky on more recent history. He knows very little about Japan and China but that doesn't stop him from expounding on them, and one year in Germany a few years back obviously doesn't make one an expert on modern Europe.

Also, unions and rational trade laws are really important (NAFTA is a disaster), but to listen to Hartmann you'd think that that was all we needed to turn our economy around and bring back the middle class. Sorry, but it's not 1962 anymore. We actually have some economic competition in the world now.

Unions, rational trade laws and stripping Corps of personhood, which allows them to control the political money game, would be excellent first steps in bringing back the MC. Most of the "competition" that we face is based on slave labor, which tariffs would address.

I've never understood the logic in that concept. Incorporating is privilege that should benefit the state and the employees as well as the company rather than benefiting the company at the expense of everyone else.

Rhodes, Hartmann, and Malloy are pretty obviously the heavyweights. Ok Ok maybe Stephanie Miller could be considered a heavyweight too.

It is just as important to have a lot of less prominent hosts as it is to have a few heavyweights.

I like Mark Levine OK (on Head On Radio)

I think I like Jay Diamond as much as anyone else --maybe even my favorite. He has been off the air for a couple years.

50. Springer's attention wavered---for a few months in the middle of
his run I think he was as good as anyone. He started out too mild and ended too disinterested. In the middle months he was pretty good. I have never heard a host -- make more eloquent statements on civil rights and freedoms.

54. Tough choice, but
I gotta go with Thom Hartmann. He is superb at connecting the dots and giving deep explanations. I just wish he didn't have reichwing kooks on so often in the first segment.

I only heard Mike Malloy a few times before AAR booted him. He was outstanding. Can't stream cos I am still dial up. :(

I don't mind Shultz and thoroughly enjoy Randi's righteous outrage. And Steph is a great way to start the day.

61. How could you forget the best: Bernie Ward?
No one is as quick-witted in a debate and as devastating to right wingers as Bernie.

I also think Ian Masters on Pacifica Radio has the most informative show on the air, with the best guests. But he only has a show once a week on Sundays and is on in a limited market.

63. Guy James dammit!
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 11:32 PM by JanMichael
He was forced off the air in SW Florida by Repuke radio station owners/managers for gawds sake.

I'll admit I favor him because I sat in on the air with him on several occasions a few years ago but frankly he's the only talk radio host I can tolerate. For any length of time.

I typically can't stand talk radio other than Guy.

72. Looks like I'll miss progressive talk today
due to having to accompany school kids to state government today to show how it works (or doesn't depending on one's point of view). You all have a great day.

73. Guy James.
He's the only one I've ever heard. I'm not a talk radio, or talk show, fan. I've listened to Guy when I could, although I haven't heard him since the show left Saturdays when I was home to catch it.

75. Ron Kuby on NYC's WABC RW hate radio superstation.
Plays the token lefty. He's a supertalented civilrights lawyer and regularly makes mince meat out of his RW cohost and sluggish callers-in.

Also quite charming and amusing.

I also like Rachel Maddow and Thom Hartman.

Randi Rhodes is a monologist more than a talk show host. As a monologist she's not bad ( in small doses) but 'talk show' implies that there's back-and-forth somewhere in there.

80. God, anybody but Thom Hartmann..
.. he is the most boring, self-serving ass I've ever heard and IMO, has single handedly brought Air America Radio down a several more notches than they already were. Funny thing is, it seems AAR lost sponsors when Franken left. Now their commercial breaks seem to be filled with music which is a sign of no sponsorship. I give AAR another 6 months because of that stupid move.
