Carlyle Group Chief Buys the Magna Carta
David Rubenstein, co-founder and president of The Carlyle Group, has bought at auction a 710-year old copy of the Magna Carta. He paid $21.3 million for it.

The document was owned by Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot's Perot Foundation.

Bearing the seal of King Edward I and dated 1297, it is one of 17 known copies.

Originally written in 1215, the Magna Carta established key elements of the rule of law, including the writ of habeas corpus, the right to a trial by jury, and the presumption of innocence before the law. King John of England agreed, in 1215, to the demands of his barons and authorized that handwritten copies of the Magna Carta be prepared on parchment, affixed with his seal, and publicly read. Thus he bound not only himself but his "heirs, for ever" to grant "to all freemen of our kingdom" the rights and liberties described in the charter.

2. My cynical take on this is that he's buying it to suppress it
Fortunately, however, there are copies elsewhere in the world, most notably at Salisbury Cathedral in England.

Its in medieval Latin and enclosed in a glass case, but I read the modern English translation on the wall. It was striking how many of the rights listed there, guaranteed under English common law since the thirteenth century, are being violated by this administration.

5. Yeah, I bet Cheney called the Lego firefighters before the real ones.
He needed the extra time to do as much damage as he could.

4. They want to display it in a museum, just like a stuffed and mounted
mammoth. "Kids, this is an extinct document that represents an extinct, dead form of civic government. Isn't it quaint? Think how funny it was when those ancient, backward people actually believed things like this. They also used to think the world was round - I'm not kidding! But we'll talk about that in theology class."

8. They want to remove all traces of it in this new world order. Watch for mention
of it to be removed from history books.

10. I remind in every Carlyle thread, co-founder RUBEINSTEIN was Jimmy CARTER staffer
Why he chose to make Rethugs rich(er), instead of Dems, I don't know. But Jimmy had a whole nest of vipers at his breast: Tweety, Pat CADDELL...

.... In a column posted yesterday on Salon.com, Joe Conason writes: "Preferring to avoid public scrutiny for obvious reasons, executives at the Carlyle Group usually say nothing about their firm's connections with the Bush dynasty. But last April 23, Carlyle managing director David Rubenstein spoke quite frankly about the comfy sinecure he provided to George W. Bush more than a decade ago -- and how useless Bush turned out to be. Whether he knew it or not, Rubenstein's remarks to the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association were recorded."

Rubenstein said, "We put (Bush) on the board and (he) spent three years. Came to all the meetings. Told a lot of jokes. Not that many clean ones. And after a while I kind of said to him, after about three years - you know, I'm not sure this is really for you. Maybe you should do something else. Because I don't think you're adding that much value to the board. You don't know that much about the company.

Rubenstein continued: "He said, 'Well, I think I'm getting out of this business anyway. And I don't really like it that much. So I'm probably going to resign from the board.' And I said, thanks - didn't think I'd ever see him again. His name is George W. Bush. He became President of the United States. So you know if you said to me, name 25 million people who would maybe be President of the United States, he wouldn't have been in that category. So you never know. Anyway, I haven't been invited to the White House for any things." ....
