Poll question: Will the Spears pregnancy affect opinion on abortion?
Will the pregnancy of Britney Spears' 16-year-old sister, Jamie-Lynn affect public opinion on abortion?

13. This family has adequate finances to support this new life.
I am ashamed to read here that the thought of abortion comes into play when obviously the girl wants to keep her baby.

I'm pro-choice 100% but ....come on folks.

5. Are you a parent?
Parents have to talk about this with their kids. Kids want to know why she kept the baby. Mine did. I told them that she was a stupid slut and that if she wasn't so damn rich and famous already, keeping the baby would doom her to a nothing existence of trailer parks and men who beat her.

As far as I can tell, that's about the only reason.

Judgment and insight appear to be in short supply in the Spears clan.

11. Pardon? I do.
What is your point?

Like another poster above, I told my 14-yr-old daughter that this girl is has more money than sense, which my daughter had already figured out. I have no way of knowing whether the young Ms. Spears is a slut. As far as I know, 16-yr-old girls who have sex are pretty normal. The ones who do so without protection are just stupid.

12. And ones who choose to have the baby
are also stupid.

This story is sensationalized because it draws attention away from the bigger issues.

There is always some sordid celebrity tale that people latch onto lasciviously. This is only the latest.

I don't have a teenaged daughter, but if I did, I would tell her that having a baby at 16 will seriously ruin your life.

14. Perhaps.. If there were support agencies.. which a lot of H.S. set up
so a mother can continue on with education while their babies go to the daycare at the same school.. It helps.. Its not ideal, but it can help. If we look at the history of women having children over time, you will find that today, women have children much older than ever before. Dr.s know the best time for females to conceive, for their bodies, is between 16/17 and 24... But 16yr olds are children today and protected which they should be. We are not a society that needs to endlessly breed, and 1 to 2 children are plenty to decide upon later in life. I don't think that it is the end of your life... its just sooo taboo in this society.

We def. need better education programs and better access to prevention for both young men and young women. Absitnence only programs just don't work... Having access to the prevention is even more ideal because its not easy for young women to get b.c... and condoms should be handed out like candy, just in case. The college I went to offered free women's clinic, free b.c., and all the condoms you'd like.. as well as a slew of pamphlets on different std's and options if you become pregnant. It was really a great program that worked and didn't assume.. Peraps setting up a "clinic" in H.S. would help in this situation. Sex isn't the only thing women should be getting their anual check-ups for; likewise young men...

22. Out of touch? Obsessing over a pregnant 16 year old because her SISTER is famous - now that is out
of touch. Teen pregnancy is a serious issue. But how does invading the privacy of a child by publicly discussing her pregnancy simply because she happen to have a famous sister do anything to help. Answer: It doesn't. Enough of justifying celebrity gawking by invoking some broader social benefit. This is a child. She and her family deserve some privacy to figure out how to best handle this situation without the "help" of a nation of busybodies.

31. Thumbsup to both of your posts above.
I have a Nickelodean watching son old enough to grasp what's going on and if the issue comes up I'll discuss it openly with him and will let him know that I expect him to take as much responsibility as the girl must.

We can scream and shout or use it as a very good teachable moment. I intend to do the latter--without judging the young woman involved.

35. She probably shouldn't have revealed her pregnancy to a magazine if she wanted privacy
Especially since she's only 3 months along and could have easily hid this from the public for a long time.

That said, I don't really care. But I'm always intrigued when celebrities willingly expose their private life to the public and then expect privacy.

46. A 16 year old cannot make those decisions on her own. Her mother would have had to sign. And I say
boo on her mother and boo on the magazine. Adults are supposed to protect children, not exploit them for financial gain. And what about the unborn child? Who is protecting his/her right to privacy?

52. I share the disgust for her mother's part in this, too.
Not that little Spears is a faultless victim. I'm sure she has the resources and lawyers to get herself emancipated if she wants to. Perhaps she already is. 16 years can make more money in showbiz if they can work as adults.

Devil's advocate aside, I assume as you do that her mother had a large part in this, and they likely took the check before even considering the welfare of all involved.

They all suck IMO. The family, the magazines, and the industry that licks their chops at this kinda PR.

I am faulting the adult failure to protect the child here. Under our laws a child cannot give up privacy without a parent signing off on it. Shame on the parent who allows this.

51. Most of us are old farts. We don't watch kid's tv programs. That doesn't mean we can't comment on
the wrongness of this. The fact that a child is on tv is no excuse for exploiting them for our own prurient entertainment. It is you who is out of touch with what is proper. Some things are always wrong. Exploiting a child is one of them, and no it does not matter if the child has given consent. A child cannot give that kind of consent in a civilized society. That is why the guardians of the child must protect them. In this case the mother (I presume) failed in her responsibility.

She watches Nickelodeon and likes Jamie Lynn's show "Zoey 101". We had a long discussion over the pregnancy, best I could tell her was that Jamie Lynn has made a decision that will change her life forever. She will have to grow up very fast and give up a lot of the fun teenage stuff. It's not something to be taken lightly.
