4. Why is anyone hawking...
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 06:31 PM by jumpoffdaplanet
...the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. It's funded by Mormons. I wouldn't want them to get their hands of anyone's dna.

7. I'm not Mormon. But I've done genealogical research for about 30 years
Why? For one thing, it has given me a clear health history of my family. I know, for example, that glycemic issues and thyroid issues go back several generations. The fact that I know my great-great grandmother went blind from glaucoma has made me make sure I get a test for that disease every year.

For another, I love history and like this personal look at it.

As for the SMGF--I wasn't aware it was Mormon. Thanks for the heads up. I won't deal with them then. Hey, we NEED you over in the group to let us know these things!

8. If I'm not mistaken
part of a Mormon missionary's duty is to catalog geneology where they go.

9. You are mistaken
thats not part of their dueties - missionaries work only with the living (assuming you mean the missionaries you see on bikes etc and are in there late teens early 20s).

11. I'm not sure I am
I seem to remember a geneology site run by the Mormons. I'll see if I can find it.

12. Not all mormons are on full time missions for the church
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 07:48 PM by FreeState
There are many sites that have LDS members that run them. The church has libraries open to anyone that wants to use them that are run by volenteers - these are not what you refer to as missionaries - I was a missionary - so Im well aquatinted with what they do.

Just and FYI there are roughly 60K missionaries and there are 13 million members on record

13. Thanks for the info.
I could've sworn I read the missionary's did the work. Am I right that there is a site run by the church? And if so, do you have a link? From what I recall, the database was extensive.

14. Here is the main site
http://www.familysearch.org/

You might be getting the volunteers (whom may be asked to serve a specific period of time at a church run genealogy library with missionaries - both of them wear the same name tags - or at least they did 10 years ago when I still attended. )

10. Being funded by a Mormon is not the same as being Mormon funded
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 07:38 PM by FreeState
Yes there are mormons involved with the site - no it is not an LDS operation. Infact if you bother to read the FAQ you will see that they do not even store any personal identifying information in its database. They even state they are not affiliated with any religion. But hey don't let a little thing like that stop an irrational fear of Mormons.

15. Yes I read their faq, and I don't believe them
Mormons are all about adding names of dead people to their cult. And yes I do believe it's a cult.

Any so-called religion banning non-members from a marriage ceremony, even if it's the parents of bride/groom, is bent beyond reason.

I'll never forget them banning non-whites, and that they only changed to make mormons running for political office look mainstream.
