Bush didn't wage war by himselfThe Iraq war is a result of the government doing what it thought was right for the American people.
I am tired of people saying that President Bush lied about Iraq and that he went to war because he wanted to. First of all, Congress supported Bush's plan to go into Iraq, and how did the war benefit him and the Republican Party?
The war ruined Bush's political future and reputation and pretty much ensured that a Democratic candidate would take the presidency in 2008. How would a "stupid" president be able to trick Congress into voting for the war if it didn't really want to?
The second argument I hear a lot is that we just went to Iraq for the oil. Well, where is the oil? The last time I checked gasoline was a little under $3 a gallon.
The most common thing I hear is that our soldiers are still there after nearly five years and should come home.
We still have soldiers in Germany and Japan from World War II. Soldiers are going to stay there, no matter what. Congress wants to leave before the job is finished.
If we do that, all those soldiers would have made the ultimate sacrifice for nothing. By being in Iraq, we are dictating the conditions of the war.
Because we are fighting there, the American people are safe at home. Democrats are all for going to war to help establish peace, but they want it to be done in a day. Republicans realize that it will take longer to accomplish their goals and they are not willing to give up and let people die in vain. Edmund Burke said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." The government did what it thought was right, not what would be popular a few years later.

Well! Jenna has really dribbled a bibful, as my father used to say. Note the stale Fox News talking points parroted here:
- Iraq is just like Germany and Japan after WW II (yeah, right)
- We are fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here (sigh)
- We must keep fighting so those already lost will not have died in vain (this is an amoral justification for perpetual, endless war)
Jenna wonders "Where is the oil?" Well you see, dear, we went to Iraq to gain control over their oil but failed miserably. So the oil is still there. In fact, less is being pumped now than when Saddam was in power.
Her last paragraph is incomprehensible to me. The
Democrats "want it done in a day"? Before the war, we were told by the
Republicans that the war would be a quick one, and that the troops would be "home for Christmas" (that was Christmas 2003). It seems like it was the Republicans who thought it could be "done in a day". (They also told us it would cost $50 billion max. The most recent estimate I've seen of the total cost is $2 trillion.)
Nice try, Jenna.
